The fact that so many people these days are legitimately offended by the usage of words like “guys” (“Hey guys!”) and “man” (“Man, that sucks.”) in completely neutral contexts that have nothing to do with anyone’s gender disturbs me greatly. I’ve no patience for it. @JaclynGlenn
I’m not a transphobe by any means, and I have a dear friend who is not just transgender but fully transsexual (I also like a few transgender YouTubers—most notably @MsBlaireWhite), but when someone brings up “identity,” I tend to not have much desire to speak with them further.
This thread isn’t prompted by any one thing in particular—it’s more of a general thing, inspired by a few specific cases which occasionally float to the forefront of my mind. …Speaking my mind, in other words.
To be clear, I’m generally fairly chill about this subject & will usually try to adapt & accommodate when someone I know is transitioning—especially when they’ve taken steps to officially do it. Asking me to change my general speech or instantly wipe all memory of your old self…
No. You can’t expect people to just instantly forget you were ever someone else when they have memories spanning years. The brain doesn’t work that way. And while I’m happy to be respectful & accommodating, I won’t be told how to speak just because you don’t know who you are.
That last bit WAS specific to an experience I had with a once-super-close friend. Nothing unpleasant went down, but I haven’t spoken to the person since. You cannot rightly expect me to walk on eggshells around you, nor am I less of a friend if I can’t twinkle my nose & forget.
