Let's talk about why seemingly small things are big factors in hate.
Native people carry with us the exhaustion of hoping that everyday Americans will choose to see us.
When did you start to believe the things you now believe about us? When did ideas embedded in colonization and hate start?
In childhood.
In school.
At church.
"Indigenous peoples cared and still care fo this land."
"Yes, they are still here, living all over the place."
"Let's learn about the tribe from this land."
"No, you can't wear that costume, here's why."
"No, that is a stereotype. Let me tell you what that is."
We must do better.
Later today, I'll talk to my kids about it.
Tomorrow, I hope that I'll pay attention to the way they are treating other people that reinforce hate.
I hope to be better tomorrow than I am today.
And I hope that for others, too.
You need to say to us, "We see you. We are listening. We are decolonizing something because it matters. We are part of the problem and choose to be part of the solutions. We are in."
Only together.
It's hard as hell.
It produces anxiety.
It sits harder on those who are constantly dominated by lies.
But, opt-in.
It's your human duty.
And it's mine, too.
