I came home yesterday from the #EvolvingFaith19 conference to find out that while I was gone, a teacher at my kids' school taught them the tomahawk chop and they all performed it together on Friday morning.

Let's talk about why seemingly small things are big factors in hate.
Next week, the holiday formerly known as Columbus Day is coming. Then Halloween w/ the Pocahottie and war bonnet costumes. Then Thanksgiving, and well, you know what that means.

Native people carry with us the exhaustion of hoping that everyday Americans will choose to see us.
We can see these things happening and say, "it's not a big deal, they are just kids," BUT that's exactly the point.

When did you start to believe the things you now believe about us? When did ideas embedded in colonization and hate start?

In childhood.
In school.
At church.
We grow up with ideas embedded in white supremacy and erasure, and by the time we are 30, 40, 50 years old, we *hopefully* begin to see the damage done, and the long process of un-learning begins.
We could say:

"Indigenous peoples cared and still care fo this land."
"Yes, they are still here, living all over the place."
"Let's learn about the tribe from this land."
"No, you can't wear that costume, here's why."
"No, that is a stereotype. Let me tell you what that is."
But every time parents/teachers/pastors/leaders say that it's not a big deal, hate takes root without us even realizing it. One step closer to raising kids embedded/complicit in white supremacy and settler colonialism.

We must do better.
So today, I'm emailing the school.
Later today, I'll talk to my kids about it.

Tomorrow, I hope that I'll pay attention to the way they are treating other people that reinforce hate.
I hope to be better tomorrow than I am today.

And I hope that for others, too.
It's not enough for us to say to you, "We are still here! Look! We are here!"

You need to say to us, "We see you. We are listening. We are decolonizing something because it matters. We are part of the problem and choose to be part of the solutions. We are in."

Only together.
Remember, truth-telling isn't really fun.
It's hard as hell.
It produces anxiety.
It sits harder on those who are constantly dominated by lies.

But, opt-in.
It's your human duty.
And it's mine, too.
oops typo you know what i meant.
This just recently happened if you want to learn more about the chop:
