In honor of the cheap apartment building: maybe the most famous of its kind in the world, the Tokiwaso (in Tokyo) was a wood frame plastered pre-war building converted to a cheap dormitory after the war, demolished in 1982. It was home to many legendary Japanese manga artists.
Similar buildings still survive here and there around the country but they are getting fewer and fewer every year. The historical importance of Tokiwaso and the role its design & layout had in influencing the studio system of Japanese manga has turned it into a national treasure.
Belatedly, a replica built as closely as possible after the original (which was one of very few wooden buildings to survive the war) will be opened to the public in March 2020. Tokiwaso is hugely popular with building model enthusiasts: you can't visit a a show without seeing it.
