Makes ke sick to think the Supreme Court is deciding today whether or not I deserve the same civil rights protections against being fired for who I am as anyone else.

A married gay man is running for POTUS in 2019, but days like this remind me equal rights is still a fight. 🏳️‍🌈
The outcome of today's hearings could determine whether orgs like @SouthernEqual see a viable path in challenging Mississippi's #HB1523, which made it legal for businesses to refuse to serve LGBT people based on religious beliefs about marriage or gender.

A federal judge struck down #HB1523 in 2016, but the conservative 5th Circuit overturned the ruling, saying the plaintiffs did not have standing because the law had not been invoked to discriminate against them (the law had not even gone into effect bc the judge had blocked it).

My mom (a Democratic voter) and dad (a Republican voter) have both, at different points since 2016, asked me to get out of news/political reporting out of fear for my life in consideration. This video makes me sick.

More context: Like Russia, Turkey was rooting for Trump in 2016. While Vladimir Putin feared a President Hillary Clinton would kill his dream of reuniting the Old Soviet Union (including Ukraine), Erdogan feared she would arm the Syrian Kurds.

So, I’ve noticed a pattern (incoming thread):

1) A white person gets caught doing something racist and/or violent.
2) Other white people avoid talking about the racism by changing the subject to mental illness.

3) This is usually framed as concern for “getting them the help that they need”. Where them = the white perpetrator or future white perpetrators or all sad white people or all scary-because-disabled white people.

This is bad for a number of reasons.
One reason this is bad is that it tends to involve prioritizing the needs of white perpetrators over the needs of their victims of color.

I love when straight people parse my civil rights for me.

If the #EqualityAct passes the House and does not pass the Senate--and not ONE Republican in Congress supports it nor do all Democrats--that means it doesn't pass.

Having people vote on your right to be equal is awful.
Also, every queer and trans person in America has the right to be furious.

My wife lost a teaching position over being gay. Everyone I know has been threatened with losing their jobs for being gay. I couldn't get a mortgage with my wife because we were gay. The list is long.

There will be a lot of sentimentality about George H.W. Bush, with people casting him as a noble statesman, compared with Trump and with his own son. Do not fall for this.

H.W. was a architect of the current situation, where the GOP is completely consumed by right wing nuts.
1) Even though H.W. used to be adamantly supportive of reproductive rights — his nickname in Congress was “Rubbers” — he switched sides for political expedience. This move empowered the religious right, ushering in an era of right wing terrorism against abortion clinics.
By helping lift up the religious right in this way, H.W. paved the way for his son to win the presidency by campaigning on anti-LGBT and anti-woman policies. So the Iraq War is the eventual result of H.W. pandering on this issue.

David Perdue tells reporters Richard Russell was “a giant of the Senate” and deserves to have a building named after him.
“This renaming thing because of one issue is somewhat troubling,” he said.
That “one issue” is Russell’s key role as a champion of racial segregation.
Perdue said Russell created the school lunch program, backed the Great Society war on poverty (which Perdue said failed) and cited his oversight of the Korean War. Etc.
Russell is the co-author of the Southern Manifesto crafted in opposition to the Supreme Court’s landmark Brown v Board of Education decision. He filibustered civil rights. He boycotted the Democratic convention after LBJ backed civil rights.
