Why did he *resign* over Theresa May's July 2018 Chequers Plan for whole UK - but now wants to impose *almost exactly the same* trade & customs arrangements on Northern Ireland?
@BBCNewsnight @guardiannews @UKLabour @LibDems @theSNP @BorisJohnson "Vassal" common rulebook on goods & facilitated customs arrangement from Chequers=virtually same as Johnson's "great new deal" for NI. Governance/dispute settlement plans by Johnson go even further than May proposals. So what's changed, PM? Why OK for NI when you resigned for GB?
@BBCNewsnight @guardiannews @UKLabour @LibDems @theSNP @BorisJohnson In fact only significant difference between "hated" Chequers plan [resign!] & Johnson's "new" backstop [great!] = lower "level playing field" commitments...

But then we know Johnson & Co are rather keen on enjoying power to drop standards for workers, environment, consumers etc

Just watching coverage of Tory launch on @BBCNewsnight . Verbal diahorrea mixed with filthy lies from Prime Charlatan Johnson. Bunch of laughing hyenas behind him. Tory ministers lining up to praise Johnson's "qualities" and heap on more propaganda. It's all so repulsive...
@BBCNewsnight I'm no Tory: fine. But I always respected the idea that reasonable decent people with different views from me might vote for moderate one nation Tories. Now? Moderates are gone or sold souls. How could anyone vote for these extremist, entitled, contemptuous political gangsters?

Official election campaign hasn't even started yet, but already Tory strategy is in full swing: to be as shamelessly dishonest as their Walter Mitty leader (& with impunity). They really have lost any claim to moral / political integrity: Trump's little disciples in every respect
And the tedious comments start coming in - Labour savaging LibDem, LibDem attacking Labour... Get a bloody grip or at least remove the "revoke now/fight Brexit/Tories out" bumpf from your profiles: you're only doing the Brexiters' job for them
But worst of all? "I voted leave, I'm so sick of it, don't mention Brexit, just get on with it". Oh poor lambs: so so sorry to bore you with the consequences of your own actions. Oi! migrant citizens, Irish bunch, businesses under threat - put a sock in it: you're boring them...

Notice the Downing Street source's careful use of "in Britain", to reflect the fact that Northern Ireland is still bound by EU law and the jurisdiction of the ECJ.
(And, come to think of it, I've heard no suggestion that the institutional provisions of the non-backstop part of the Withdrawal Agreement, which give the ECJ jurisdiction over any parts of that agreement relating to UK law, have been changed.)

This feels very big. PM spoke with German Chancellor Angela Merkel at 8am this morning. According to Downing Street source, she told the PM that there will be no Brexit deal with the UK unless Northern Ireland is in the customs union "forever". The ource says she repeated...
"forever" on "multiple occasions". So she is saying there can be no time-limited backstop. And of course it is a wholesale rejection of Johnson's offer to replace the backstop. The source says "France is saying the same thing". The government's conclusion is that EU leaders...

Before regurgitating what a Downing Street source aka Dominic Cummings says about mass violence, maybe various journalists could do their jobs and ask police or scholars focused on public order what the actual mobilisation potential of Left and Right is in UK society?
Journos tweeting about predictions of mass violence made by Tory politicians might also want to ponder which generational and social demographics are most active in protest and rioting in places like Hong Kong and then consider where equivalent UK milieus align in Brexit debate
Keep in mind when mentioning Maidan that the people building barricades and defeating riot police were carrying EU flags

So Downing Street source confirms that the leadership election will begin on 22 May, if MPs support the prime minister's deal in third meaningful vote and Brexit happens on that timetable. It is a commitment that there will be "new leadership for phase two" of negotiations...
with the EU, as per what @BorisJohnson demanded to secure his support for her Brexit. I said on Sunday night she would do this, based on conversations with sources, but truthfully I didn't really believe it.
In terms of mechanics, she stays as leader and PM till new leader is in place. So @theresa_may will presumably still be PM till circa July. Also, no guidance available at all about when she would stand down if her deal is not ratified by MPs - which still looks very likely...
