The head of the Christian Democratic Union Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer described yesterday's far-right murder of two people in Halle on Yom Kippur as an "Alarm Bell" (Alarmsignal), but there have been many more before this. A thread:
In 2011, the National Socialist Underground (NSU) terror cell was uncovered. From 2000-6 they murdered 9 people of Turkish, Kurdish and Greek heritage as well as a Police Officer. The group was responsible for bombings in Nuremberg and Cologne.
The NSU never claimed credit for these attacks and for years these killings had been blamed by the police on ethnic gangs and the threat of far-right terror had been ignored.
Since 2011, the National Socialist Underground has inspired copycats and far-right extremists have cited them as an example to follow
Far-right attacks increased with the arrival of large numbers of refugees in 2015-16 including arson attacks on refugee shelters
On June 2 2019, Walter Lübcke - a Christian Democratic politician from Kassel who supported the admission of refugees - was assassinated in his home.
The alleged (and for a time confessed, though since retracted) assassin of Walter Lübcke was a long-time member of the violent far-right
He was also linked to violence against refugees
The murder of a pro-refugee center-right politician was also supposed to be a wake-up call.
A group in the city of Chemnitz was soon after charged with forming a far-right terror cell
The Revolution Chemnitz trial began on September 30:
Police also uncovered "death lists" with targets for the far-right who were deemed to be "enemies of the people", like Walter Lübcke
And the military began a probe into far-right extremists in an elite unit, the KSK
Just days ago, on October 3, the 29th anniversary of German reunification, the far-right held demonstrations in Berlin.
With a banner declaring themselves "Anti-Antifa" the far-right demonstrators also chanted "If we want to, we'll beat you dead!" Wenn wir wollen, schlagen wir euch tot!
On Oct 6 in Zwickau, a memorial tree to Enver Şimşek, the first NSU victim, was cut down in the night. A replacement memorial bench was then also destroyed.
On October 7, the national government announced cuts to programs meant to combat far-right violence and provide an exit for members of the neo-Nazi scene
The alarm has been ringing for years. The government isn't taking this threat seriously. Thoughts and prayers aren't enough.
