Twenty years ago, an awkward teenager at St. Joe High School in South Bend, Indiana, who didn’t know a single out LGBTQ+ student, never would have imagined how far we would come as a country. But what does our country look like to a closeted teen today? What future do they see?
They see a president banning trans service members from the military and attacking gay rights. They see queer-friendly businesses opening but can't forget Pulse. They see hate crimes rising. They see a country where they are still not fully free or safe—unsure if they belong.
Coming out is difficult. It was for me, too. After serving overseas, I realized that every day is a gift. I did not want to live my life without knowing what it is like to be in love. Years later, I am running for president with my loving husband @Chas10Buttigieg by my side.
Coming out requires finding the courage to share your truth. It requires you to stand on the hope that you will be accepted, and the faith that you can overcome rejection. If today is your day, I am proud of you. Your future is bright. You belong. Happy #NationalComingOutDay!
