When Trump refuses to take sides in a dispute between obviously good guys and obviously bad guys, he will often say something about how the two sides are really the same. There are good people on both sides, he'll say, or the "good" guys are actually bad.

Quick thread.
A few examples. First, Trump was not bothered by Vladmiir Putin ordering journalists assassinated. Why not? "I think our country does plenty of killing also." thedailybeast.com/trump-defends-…
Second, Trump is not bothered by the Kurds being abandoned. Why? The Kurds "are not angels." thedailybeast.com/trump-says-kur…
Third, after Charlottesville, there were "very fine people, on both sides." politifact.com/truth-o-meter/…
What gives? I'm not a psychologist, but this March 2016 Politico article about Trump's worldview, written by a biographer of Trump, is worth your time. Key paragraph below. politico.com/magazine/story…
More here, following up the paragraph above.
If the author is right, Trump's frequent saying that both sides are equal may just reflect his core worldview that the strong win and that "good" versus "bad" is irrelevant. At least it's a possibility; in any event, I think that 2016 Politico article is worth a read today. /end
To add one more, I think this also may explain why Trump can't understand why you would help someone else. If life is combat in which the strong survive, the law of the jungle, you don't ever want to help anyone. That just saps your resources and makes you weaker, which is bad.
