If Pompeo ever wanted to get more hated within @StateDept this line to @GStephanopoulos today is certainly going to do it: "I think Bill Burns must be auditioning to be Elizabeth Warren's secretary of state." (Burns is a revered former career official who served under Ds and Rs)
@StateDept @GStephanopoulos The whole interview is astonishingly political for a Secy of State, who is supposed to represent the USA. Jabs at Obama, digs at the fact that GS worked for a D president, defensive in the extreme. The mild-mannered and measured Burns spoke for many within State w/ his article

He entered the Foreign Service in 1982.

Some of the commentary on the Trump-Zelensky call appears to be missing the forest for trees. From my perspective of covering diplomacy for nine years, here’s the hole in the donut….1/5
Leaders of countries are very busy people and they generally have defined objectives when planning for the call. Zelensky’s goal is clear: he wants and needs a meeting with Trump to signify continued US support (potentially in doubt because of Trump’s praise for Putin). 2/5
But what’s Trump’s goal? What foreign-policy objectives of the United States is he trying to advance? Normally there is a checklist of talking points a president goes through. But there is nothing, except for his asks concerning an investigation of the Bidens and DNC server. 3/5

hey, Twitterverse, has anyone seen a good estimate of how many contractors have been affected by the government shutdown?
I should note that we did a big story on the businesses affected, but offered no estimate. But it says there are twice as many contractors working for the govt as federal workers. washingtonpost.com/graphics/2019/…

2/ a Bankruptcy Bill blog and then that was folded into Warren Reports which was part of TPMCafe which we launched in the summer of 2005. Our staff is going back and collecting and will soon republish all of this. So I was looking back at the correspondence between us.

If he says it can, then all hell will break loose. We'll be right back where we were on Saturday, in a straight yes-or-no vote on the deal, without MPs seeing the legislation implementing it.
It's likely that a Letwin 2 amendment would be put down again calling for the legislation to be published. The govt has suggested that it would then pull the vote.

Mueller Report

1/ My wife and I ordered a couple of copies of the Washington Post edition of Mr. Mueller’s report. It’s 750+ pages because there’s a 50 page introduction, a separate and wonderful article about the lives of Mueller and Trump,
2/ and -- after the two volume document -- the texts of all the indictments Mueller’s team produced. Took awhile to read.
3/ Here are my two main take-aways: we have sustained a major, debilitating, successful attack by a malevolent, mafia-led state which intends to attack us again; they have empowered us to install a criminal enterprise, beholden to them, in the White House.
