Inspired by @gradydoctor & @TheRealDoctorT today, I’d like to write a few words...
A #MedThread on how climate change impacts human health from the front line.
We are experiencing planned power shutdowns at the peak of California wildfire season.
At my house it was 23 hours this time, 55 last week. Another this weekend.
But it is so much worse.
A person told me they can’t go home b/c there’s no one to care for them in a blackout. If it goes out this weekend they have to come back to the ED.
This is not unique.
Today there was a fire near the hospital where I work, we could see the smoke.
Damn it was close
It was rapidly contained, there were no evacuations.
There was anxiety though, tangible, & intense. Surreal.
Long stares out the window, waiting for updates, staving off rumor
This is a tiny slice of how climate change affects people, & Santa Rosa is not directly dealing w/ a fire at the time of this writing...medications & income lost, mental health disrupted. Air quality deteriorates. Mindset, morale, productivity, happiness. All degraded.
The next Explore The Space ep is about how climate change effects human health. In it @KHayhoe lays out what’s happening now. We are in the middle of this & it’s a pressure cooker. Hard work, hard choices, & hard days lie ahead.
There are no exceptions or exemptions. Location, money, denial, none will absolutely protect you. Climate change is our apex predator, everyone has a part to play.
That’s where I find hope, that we’ll channel energy, creativity, resources to mitigate & adapt.
I love the bold strokes & stances taken by so many, we will move forward together. Climate change isn’t an issue, it’s an era. We have agency on how this era will unfold, but it is unfolding fast.
Thanks for reading
