Alright, THREAD TIME.

Here are my top 50 favorite genres of all time; gonna choose 4 albums that best represent the genre or different styles/approaches to the genre. LET'S START:
50. Noise

Yes it's a fucking genre. Umbrella term, sure. These albums incorporate sonic extremities. Lyrics pertaining with the dark side of one's psyche or humanity. Cathartic and unapologetic.
49. Bubblegum Bass

I'm loving this new sound of electronic pop! Completely off the wall yet addictive. Empowering and fun, cannot wait to hear more of this sound!
48. Avant-Folk

Acoustic folk music that's like no other. Strange, incredibly unique compositions. Sometimes the lyrics have some sense of mysticism to them. Other-worldly.
47. Drone

Incredibly long compositions. Mesmerizing. Hypnotic. Sound therapy. This kind of music can ease up tension or create tension. Taught me alot about patience. Feels and sounds like you're falling into an abyss or traveling beyond worlds.
46. Minimal Wave/Synth

Electronic music with emphasis on minimalism. Not too complex but pretty strange. These albums can create an unsettling atmosphere or a feeling of isolation.
45. Jazz Fusion

Jazz with rock guitars. Jazz that goes beyond the standards of traditional jazz. Jazz that incorporates electronic instruments. These albums just V I B E, ya know?
44. Funk

From synth-funk to funk rock to jazz-funk to afrobeat, the funk is everywhere. Love how rhythmic it is. Amazing grooves that'll make you wanna get up and boogie!
43. Vaporwave

There's going to be a time where our kids will ask, "What did you listen to in the 10s?" And this is only a small selection of what we'll show em.

Seriously, it's incredible that this genre was birthed from the internet & started its own counterculture.
42. Hardcore Hip-Hop/Gangsta Rap

Blew up in the 90s, influenced and continues to influence the genre. I love the agression and the intensity. There's also the contrast of introspection within these albums.
41. Alternative Metal

Yeah, probably the most accessible subgenre for metal, but without it, I wouldn't have gotten into heavier stuff. The great stuff that came out of alternative metal still hits hard today. A wide variety of influences and sounds.
40. Instrumental Hip-Hop

It takes a lot of skill to take a sections from multiple songs and mash em together to make it sound unique. Amazing instrumentals from these albums. These albums have so much emotional depth just by using samples.
39. Progressive Rock

Flourished in the 70s. Incredible musicianship and compositions. A mixture of styles, these artists were not afraid to expand their sound or find new techniques. Some of the greatest albums are within this genre for sure.
38. Alt-Country

Most likely the only country subgenre that I love. Probably because of how unconventional most of these artists/albums are. Some of the best songwriting I've heard. Wilco may be a stretch but they're one of the forerunners of the genre.
37. Darkwave/Coldwave

Dark and beautiful. Neoclassical darkwave is included here. Incorporating different genres & styles, this genre is all about the darkness. Amazing compositions & singing.

(tbf I should've just put Lingua Ignota here & Molchat Doma in minimal wave oh well)
36. Death Metal

Brutal. Disgusting. Intense. A top tier metal genre without a doubt. Pretty sick that there's multiple subgenres for it too. Some of the best metal albums were from this genre alone!
35. Hard Bop

Some of the best jazz albums came from this subgenre. Hard hitting, rhythmic & intricate. This was the subgenre that got me into jazz.
34. Mathcore

Fucking insane compositions & vocals. Like imagine if math rock got fucked by metal & hardcore at the same time. So much energy & intensity. These albums are titans of the genre!
33. Post-Hardcore

Beyond hardcore punk in terms of sound and approach. These albums have incredible dynamics and instrumentation. Intense, energetic and noisy, just the way I like it.
32. Math Rock

All styles of math rock incorporate some noise rock. Everything sounds like it's going against each other. Whether it's more lowkey like Slint or blasting in your head like Lightning Bolt. I love my music chaotic.
31. Post-Rock

Compositions that are otherworldly. Soundtracks to a films that were never made. Atmospheric, grand, and emotionally gripping. This is beyond normal rock music. Uplifting yet gentle. Amazing albums.
30. Krautrock

During the 70s, Germany had their own experimental rock scene. Some of the most forward thinking music was created here. Nontraditional, unconventional and groundbreaking. These albums were bringing fresh sounds.
29. Jangle Pop

Some really nice, sometimes laid back, janglely guitar, pop songs. Huge influence on indie pop, this can either be feel good music or beautiful music to cry to.
28. Trip-Hop/Downtempo

Some of the coldest instrumentals you'll ever hear. Moody vibes, laid back beats and whisper-y singing. One of the first subgenres of electronic music I got into.
27. Chamber Pop

Beautiful arrangements, emotionally gripping and STRINGS. I can count on these albums to make me feel warmth. Grand and pretty epic.
26. Slowcore

I'm so glad this exists. It's exactly what it sounds like, slow tempo songs about sadness. Rooted in folk, but more indie and heavier lyrics. A favorite for when it's a lonely or rainy night.
25. Hypnagogic Pop

Pop music that's nostalgic yet these memories never actually happened. A bit psychedelic, and alot of lo-fi. Some of my all time favorites were birthed out of this obscure, niche genre. Not too obscure that it's inaccessible. Just weirdo music.
24. Microhouse/Minimal Techno

Yeah I know Jaar is more "ambient house" but sometimes those labels are interchangeable. Electronic music that keeps the mind engaged and concentrated. At least for me. Love the development of these projects, lots of unexpected moments.
23. Industrial

From industrial rock to post-industrial to synthpunk to industrial metal, industrial music has played a huge part for extreme music. Love the intensity, the dark atmospheres and how experimental it can get. Def one of my favorite electronic genres of all time.
22. Noise Pop

Definitely one of my favorite brands of pop muisc. Incorporating noisy elements to ones upbeat songwriting. Catchy songs and a beautiful contrast of soft to loud dynamics. Versatile.
21. Black Metal

Gonna be real, I hated this genre for the longest time. But as of late it has become one of my favorites. I could careless about the Satanist aspects; I just love the darkness of it. The feeling of defeat, disgust & despair. That's what black metal is all about.
20. Avant-Garde/Spiritual/Free Form Jazz

All of these records share a similar aspect & that is that they go beyond any expectations. Boundary pushing, grand compositions & unique. I'm left floored by these artists.
19. Trap

PLEASE DON'T GET MAD BUT GODDAMN THIS IS INFECTIOUS.

Trap peaked this decade. We've had amazing projects. You might think it all sounds alike but once you get into the genre, you'll realize how diverse it can be. Truly the hardcore punk of hip-hop.
18. Synthpop

The best electronic pop genre. Groovy, funky and catchy. Sometimes the instrumentals contrast the moody lyrics; think that's what I love about it the most.
17. Hardcore Punk

Ruthless, direct, and unapologetic. Some of my all time favorites are hardcore punk albums. I just love chaos in my music. From straight forward like Black Flag to an epic concept album like Hüsker Dü, it's all about the attitude.
16. Garage Rock / Garage Punk

One of my early introductions to punk. The genre that would influence punk as we know it There's been a resurgence in garage rock & I love it. Love how direct these albums are yet they also sound like a fun jam session. Incredible sound!
15. Jazz Rap / Conscious Hip-hop

There's not much I can say but some of the greatest music of all time came from these albums & this is the style they share. Incredible lyricism, fantastic head-bopping beats & unique direction w/ a blend of styles/influences.
14. Indie Folk

Sure, a pretty broad term but I'm certain ya know what "indie folk" sounds like. Basically just folk rock that isn't for dads and appeals to a younger audience cause they're versatile. Anyway, some of the greatest songwriters came outta this genre tag.
13. IDM

Another broad term. "Intelligent Dance Music" is just experimental electronic music. These artists keep themselves out of the box & constantly expand their sound or reinvent themselves. My favorite electronic music genre hands down.
12. Doom Metal / Stoner Rock

My favorite metal subgenre. Heavy. Brooding. Fuzzy. It makes sense since I love psych-rock so much & most of these bands were inspired by heavy-psych... But yeah, love the wall of sound these bands create!
11. Post-Punk / Art Punk

My favorite punk subgenre. You don't know what to expect from this genre! You have the moodier/darker side, the artsy wilder side or the absolute abstract! Love that they each sound so different from one another.
10. Gothic Rock

I'm a moody bitch. I love my music to be dark, depressing and mysterious. Yup these are all fantastic.
9. Shoegaze / Dream Pop

I love how cozy everything feels. And uplifting. But also depressing. Two contrasting genres that are great together. Beautiful & heartbreaking all at once.
8. Singer/Songwriter (Folk)

This one was difficult to pinpoint but just someone with an acoustic guitar who only sings can be amazing. Incredible storytelling and lyricism.
7. Psychedelia

Whether it's rock, pop, folk or neo, I fucking love music that sounds trippy. Some of the most interesting compositions & techniques. Psych still makes waves to this day.
6. Indie Rock / Lo-Fi Indie

A super broad term, but when I think of indie, I think of bands like these. Lo-fi and guitar driven. Amazing songwriting usually about growing up or observing the world around you. Love me good indie rock.
5. Ambient

BEST ELECTRONIC & INSTRUMENTAL BASED GENRE. I DON'T CARE. Okay so you can use your voice like Grouper, but still amazing soundscapes all around. A special genre that I can count on to relax me. Yes, I'll listen to this one hour long loop, pls and thx.
4. Art Pop

The greatest pop subgenre. Call me pretentious, but I like my pop music weird. Unconventional, pretty, grand, amazing. Just fantastic music from these artists.
3. Art Rock

Yeah, if you add "art" in front of a popular genre, the art hoes will eat it up. Seriously, these were rock albums that were seminal during their time. Either blending a mix of different influences or taking the genre out of its comfort zone. Amazing artists.
2. Experimental / Abstract Hip- Hop

lmao fuck yeah, I love this shit. I like my rappers qUiRkY. With personality. Trying their most to sound unique, different from other rappers or production techniques. Abrasive or lowkey, if it's strange, imma eat it up fasho.
1. Experimental / Noise Rock

No surprise here. Sure, a SUPER broad term similar to experimental hip-hop, but that's the point. If it sounds so off-the-wall that it's hard to put it in one genre, imma dig it most likely. Also I FUCKING LOVE NOISE.

Aight, gonna make a playlist✌
