So in the summer I did a Spurs player review...fair to say things may need another review 😬 #thfc
HUGO LLORIS: underrated captain. Clearly has the respect of his peers and mentality to compete for the big trophies. His athleticism and reflexes make him an incredible shot stopper. But too prone to error and loops his kicks which makes it very hard to be direct & attack quickly
PAULO GAZZANIGA: fantastic distribution with how flat and accurate his passes are. Solid keeper. Doesn’t make the errors that he regularly used to before joining spurs and are more than able deputy. Doesn’t have the aura or authority to be a number one for a team challenging
MICHEL VORM: was a respected dressing room member who brought calmness and trust when he was between the sticks. Good distribution, highly doubt he will feature this year, sensible decision with Lloris injury
SERGE AURIER: annoyingly, the exact profile of right back spurs need. Aggressive and dominant in 1 v 1s attacking and defending. Can overlap effectively. Athletic and powerful. But his technique is poor and decision making frighteningly rash and that won’t be fixed. Must replace
KYLE WALKER-PETERS:
Spurs killed possibility of him becoming a top RB. Needed loan 3 yrs ago. Spurs best technical FB, can dribble inside and out, intelligent, measured and composed in final 3rd. But still plays like a talented academy player. Doesnt impose physically or mentally
JUAN FOYTH: potential to be elite. Reads game excellently, strokes passes with pace and accuracy to break lines. Long legs allow him to match the stride of his attackers and get blocks and interceptions. Will need to mature mentally and physically but a huge talent
DAVINSON SANCHEZ: started season 4th choice CB imo but the way season has gone should be #1 CB. Reads game well but still believes hes stronger than he is and tries to physically overpower opponents which leads to him being rolled, due to his narrow shoulders. Stiff on ball
TOBY ALDERWEIRELD: always read game expertly but has maybe lost his athleticism. Never actually been great on the ball. Always struggled to turn and smoothly carry the ball but an elite long range passer. Asking him to play out is a huge risk. Model professional, been world class
JAN VERTONGHEN: has never been quick but really struggles with balls in behind now. Like Toby, world class reading game but far better on ball, carrying out. Wraps passes with pace into midfield. But a worrying dip this season...will need replacing. Been world class too. Legend
JAPHET TANGANGA: shouldve left in summer after a successful pre season. Would have been in enough credit to get good league 1 transfer. Stable an aggressive with how he blocks/intercepts. Small for CB however. Clever/big STs will exploit that with his lack of 1st team experience
DANNY ROSE:
So aggressive and positive in his general game. But that can seriously lead to his undoing. Mentality and coaching seen him have a great career. Better technically than given credit for but struggles final third. Far too rash. Leader and probably his last season
BEN DAVIES: should now be 1st choice LB. A far more natural footballer than Rose but doesn’t have his dynamism/aggression to run in behind and overlap. Excellent wrapping passes infield. Measured and controlled on ball but spurs need FBs who can push and run
RYAN SESSESGNON: doesn’t have enough to be an LW as not elite 1 v 1, doesn’t score from range. But an excellent crosser, being leggy and timing runs well sees him get into danger areas beyond his man and works a yard to produce. Superb movement, good technically, intelligent.
OLIVER SKIPP: one of those players who’s sensible, secure and does everything he’s supposed to. Takes care over every pass and can play it forward. Reads game well to time tackles and interceptions which means he doesn’t need as much physicality to win ball. NEEDS loan to grow up
VICTOR WANYAMA: what a shame his injuries appear to have broken him. Still elite at winning the ball anytime the player is in close proximity. One of strongest tackles/shielders of ball ever seen. Did what he had to technically. Very intelligent but simply can’t run anymore.
ERIC DIER: if 4-3-3, best option for DM. Reads game brilliantly to shepherd players into areas he wants before winning ball. Good passer. But needs to get lean and mobile again if possible as looks far too heavy legged. Model professional, clearly big character in changing room
HARRY WINKS: brilliant at passing and moving at angles to retain the ball/pressure. Far more dynamic/aggressive than given credit for. But doesnt press correctly. Too keen, doesnt cover space, leaves him exposed. Needs to learn how to slow down as no physicality to make up for it
MOUSSA SISSOKO: such a strong mindset to have turned his career around way he has. Unstoppable driving ball into space. Physical monster, defensively covers players/space sensibly and intelligently. All of that makes me think could be a great 6. Or, partner Ndombele in 4-2-2-2
TANGUY NDOMBELE: top 5 most creative players in world, my favourite to ever watch for spurs. Unique. Incredible turning from pressure and dribbling. Finds passes/angles that don’t appear there. And executes them with perfect weight. Cant track back. Throwback to creative geniuses
GIOVANI LO CELSO: not a playmaker-doesnt control tempo or play over bigger distances or with pitch and players all around him like Eriksen. similar to Lamela-close control, direct, short sharp movements. Superb player. Highly technical, vision, creates chances, scores, works hard
CHRSITAN ERIKSEN: his heart clearly isnt in it and hasnt been good enough. Was best playmaker in world for a point - could control tempo, score, assist, vision, intelligent, technically world class. play deep/high, take set pieces, run and stay fit. A shame it’s ending like this
DELE ALLI: injuries and playing different roles largely led to reduced performances. Not a midfielder as hes too lackadaisical on ball, loose, can’t carry it, can’t score from range. But he’s an elite second striker with movement, link up play, creativity and variety of finishing
ERIK LAMELA: not what we thought we were getting but deserves credit. Presses like a lunatic and when he gets a run in team, produces end product with his vision, close control, dynamism and technical ability. Excellent squad player, can’t seem to stay fit
LUCAS MOURA: will put in same level of performance if its Barca or Burton which is why he doesnt start games. Can’t slow down and asses/open teams up but incredible at driving into space and finishing with ferocity. Superb attitude. Fantastic squad player. Legend for game vs Ajax
SON HEUNG-MIN: world class as he goes both ways, finishes with both feet, works hard, runs in behind and carries the ball. Not elite as he struggles to slow down and asses with questionable decisions and not great close control. Should play wide. One of 1st names on team sheet
HARRY KANE: was worried about him losing his sharpness/mobility but not the case. Best 9 in world. Does everything right and everything a nine should and more. Variety of goals, intelligent, passes, first touch, drops, gets in behind, links, drives. Legend with legend mentality
MAURICIO POCHETTINO: best manager in my lifetime. Coaches organisation and pressing brilliantly, improves and gets most out of players and when he has players he wants, football can be energetic, attacking and dynamic. But this reliance on players means coaching attacking 1/2
2/2 movements and patterns can result in slow and boring play against low blocks. Chess. Pass. Stop. Pass. Stop. Needs to work more on attacking patterns, and demand intensity/freedom of movement, creativity. Needs to stop rotating unnecessarily. I believe he will turn it around
So what do Spurs need to fix this mess? Will take at least two windows but if we’re simply talking about who I’d ideally like to see come in in January, it’s three players.
CB
RB
DM/CM hybrid
RB - MAX AARONS: incredible dribbler and close control. Able to accelerate with the ball at his feet brilliantly. Slaloms with the ball and so difficult to stop. Good shape on his crosses, and aggressive to block/close down in defensive 1 v 1. Variety in where he dribbles/attacks
DM/ CM: IBRAHIM SANGARE: Sissoko could be this player but Sangare is 20 and fits the profile. Incredible physique. Looks awkward but still passes well. Very blocky but never loses ball. Good weight of touch on drive. Excellent retrieving the ball. Would allow Ndombele to flourish
CB - TYRONE MINGS: need left sided CB and has composed aggression I look for in CBs. Can bring calm and control to a whole backline but also step up and dominate, brilliant athleticism, measured left foot, reads game well, can play out but willing to go long. Fantastic mindset
IF POSSIBLE..JACK GREALISH.
Spurs need dynamic/creative dribblers in the final 3rd. Theyre far too slow and static in the final 3rd. rarely pull teams apart due to who usually plays there/lack of attacking patterns. Grealish would open up more avenues. Now producing end product
Thread over.
THREAD NOT OVER! TROY PARROTT: Ready to play 1st team. Knows how to play the game. Can scrap, takes advantage of his moments, and general play is what belongs on a mens football pitch due to his variety of goals, game understanding, link up, strength, work rate, technical ability
