So Ryan Sessegnon looks on his way to Spurs...here’s my thoughts on what he offers and where he would be best served #thfc #ffc

And I’d like @NathanAClark thoughts on the thread I’m about to do as I know he’s keen on Sessegnon being a left back for the future

So he made his name as a 16 year old looking at home in an incredibly tough league. That’s because Sessesgnons main attribute is his maturity and intelligence. He has a fantastic football brain. Understands where to be, how to time runs, when to plays passes etc

This saw him score a high number of goals in the championship as a LW inside the box, just outside the six yard box etc. However, in the premier league, to become a regular goalscorer you will have to find more avenues to goal than 6-10 yard tap ins due to increase in level

However, the issue is, Sessegnon is neither particularly explosive or powerful. So struggles to drive past players as a LW. And despite being technically excellent in some aspects (caressed crosses on the floor, tight control, and sharp cuts) mid-long range finishing isn’t one

Therefore its difficult to see how he could translate to an elite forward player in the prem without explosive pace/driving ability, or variation in mid-long range finishing. Timing runs in the box isnt enough to be an elite wide forward. Therefore hes surely best to develop LB?

The issue i have with this is what makes him particularly special as an LB? Again, he doesn’t have particularly good defensive understanding, and isn’t powerful to eat up the yards like Rose/Walker even Aurier

However, 1 v 1 defending as a full back, and defending in general as a full back isnt that difficult to learn comparatively. And what Sessegnon does have is a nice long stride, good technical dribbling, and excellent timing. Basically it makes him very effective exploiting space

Space which he will be afforded moreso as a full back. And explosiveness is something that is extremely fine margins and the slightest development can have a huge effect.

All in all he has some wonderful traits that make him a truly special talent I just worry that in todays modern game of aggressive, powerful, intense and direct play if he has the specific traits to become elite in either position. But his talent/age makes it worthwhile to gamble
