#thfc A thread on why 2018/19 summer transfer window was arguably the most important in Spurs history and we (read Levy) fucked up.

RTs are appreciated.
#thfc When Poch came in 2014, his main objective was to impose his brand of play in our team and reduce the gap with Top 4 going into the new stadium. Spurs had lost their identity after the 2013/14 and he had to somewhat *restore* the pride.
#thfc He did that in style. Not only did he clear all the deadwood in the likes of Adebayor, Soldado, Kaboul, etc. we also saw glimpses of his pressing style in 2014/15 although to not full effect. A Cup final and a Top 5 finish in first season, not bad at all.
#thfc 2015/16 started off pretty slowly but when the big teams around us started dropping points, we capitalized and made sure we come in Top 4. We did bottle a Top 2 finish, but most people would’ve taken a 3rd place finish at the start. Back to Champions League after 6 years.
#thfc The whole of England and world saw how Tottenham played. We had the best defense in the league, Dier was a revelation in the midfield, Alli was the most talented young player in the league and Kane proved he is no one season wonder.
#thfc Moving onto 2016/17- our last season at WHL many thought we won’t get Top 4 due to the teams strengthening around us and we won’t be able to cope up with the Champions League. In Europe we were a disaster, but we produced our best in 53 years in the league. Unbeaten at WHL.
#thfc 86 points, 86 goals scored, only 26 conceded, Kane another Golden Boot and yet there was a missing point and that was- no trophy? Many will argue that coming this far in itself was a huge success and I believe it was indeed. We had changed the culture at the club.
#thfc What culture? It was the culture of winning on and off the pitch. Squad players were mates. We hated losing. FA Cup semi final loss to Chelsea hurt bad. Earlier, we would’ve been proud of reaching this far but no more. We wanted to take the next step.
#thfc Like always there was one negative. And this time it happened to be Kyle Walker. After 9 years, he decided to leave the club because he felt he couldn’t win trophies. Don’t believe the ‘He couldn’t cope up with Poch’s training regime’. That’s bullshit. He left to win.
#thfc You believe it or not, but this was a reality check to a lot of the players and an opportunity as well. They knew the door was open if they wanted to leave, if they wanted to force a move. What was next to follow? Danny Rose’s infamous interview to Sun.
#thfc Everyone ruled us out for a Top 4 finish yet again as we played in Wembley. We were hopeful of making good signings and I think we did in the form of Sanchez, Aurier, Llorente and Foyth. Atleast the fans were happy at end of the window.
#thfc Back in Wembley and back in Top 4 yet again. Sanchez proved to be an excellent signing but Toby’s contract situation became well known since around January and we were ready to lose him. Makes no sense to me, but we were.
#thfc And around April/May there were reports starting to come that Spurs will be looking to offload Dembele,Rose and even Wanyama if possible. Again makes no sense, but it is what it is.
#thfc So here we are in the summer of 2018. Knowing that we are ready to sell upto 3 first team players since April. In an ideal world we should go and find some replacement already by now but we didn’t for some unknown reason.
#thfc So why was this summer important? Poch signing a contract amidst Real Madrid talks only meant he was ready for a new project. To win trophies at Spurs. To challenge for the title. Reducing the gap with Top 4 was done. We are the only side in Top 3 in last 3 seasons.
#thfc People keep on saying we don’t need signings. But we do. Did City need Mahrez after getting 100 points in the league? Did Chelsea need Jorginho? Did Juventus need Ronaldo? No. Quality teams always add quality to take the next step.
#thfc You don’t buy just for the sake of buying. You buy to improve the overall quality of the squad. To improve the starting XI and challenge those players. One injury to one of Eriksen, Jan or Kane and we will be struggling already.
#thfc It’s important to have that quality in your bench who can change the game when we are losing. When you look at our bench, we have Sissoko, GKN and Llorente. In best case we have a Moura or a Lamela. Really?
#thfc After 4 years of Poch’s tenure it is now the time to seriously start winning trophies. Don’t give me the lecture of ‘You haven’t seen us in 90s’. No I haven’t but when we are so close to something special why settle for mediocrity?
#thfc You see all the top squads around us strengthening and we are standing still. Credit to Poch if we do finish in Top 4 even after this but how can you even expect to win the league with such a thinn squad? Slow start to the season can again cost us.
#thfc We needed to add quality players this summer. New stadium, new environment, Champions League, players signing new contracts. Everything was perfect barring the investment. Players will leave next year if we don’t win anything. So will the manager.
#thfc My only problem is that if we knew we had to offload certain players since April why are we waiting THIS long? 6 days to go and we are hassling over a Championship player who will NOT improve our squad.
#thfc We should’ve done the business much much much earlier than this. We should’ve sold the deadwood much earlier as well. We never targeted any World Cup players- so what was the delay for? Where was the £150M budget that was promised?
#thfc Levy left it too late and unless he pulls off a miracle in these 6 days, I really don’t see this squad getting Champions League next year. We will lose few of our players and maybe the manager too, and when that happens it’s only Levy to blame for.
#thfc Bill Nic said a club like Tottenham should be winning trophies. I don’t think we relate to that any more since a lot of the fans are just content with Top 4. We need to change that. Winning can be a wonderful habit and it’s time we get used to it.
Thanks. My rant is over. End of thread.
