Mate, all advertising is political.
One obvious issue that arises is at what point an ad will be considered “political”. When an implicitly political (e.g. mainstream liberal) newspaper pushes an ad, I assume that it won't be flagged. But what if an explicitly political (e.g. socialist) magazine does the same?
From there on out you're on a slippery slope, esp. if you include “issue-based” political ads. So a climate-wrecking oil company can presumably still push its commercial ads, but can an issue-based environmental action group still use ads to raise awareness about climate change?
I see many lefties celebrating this move, but to my mind—as a political scientist—the “political” vs ”non-political” binary on which it rests is profoundly problematic, precisely b/c liberalism, as a dominant ideology, has long presented itself as non-political by definition.
