This week I gave a talk @MIT about climate policy and politics. I mentioned that the Institute continues to take money for climate research from fossil fuel companies that still promote climate denial.

In today’s @nytopinion Sunday Review, an article blames climate scientists for inaction on climate. While I’m sure the writer and editors had good intentions, this is wildly unfair and problematic. Time for another edition of Stokes does amateur media criticism in a THREAD!🧵

Let me fix that typo the editors missed: "The costs of INACTION have been enormous."

Last I checked, scientists don’t set policy. They are not to blame for our governments’ complete irresponsibility.
@nytopinion Scientists are also not responsible for the 30+ years of fossil fuel funded denial, which influenced politicians, the media and the public. Last week on a panel, some colleagues told me that the news media is doing a good job covering the climate crisis. I disagreed.

Turns out I was right: "Just 3% of broadcast TV news segments on the California wildfires connected them to climate change."

I feel quite strongly that our media is abdicating its responsibility to talk about the climate crisis. To try to chip away at the silence, I've been working with @EmilyLyWilliams and @ClimateSignals to make fact sheets. You can send them to journalists!
@EmilyLyWilliams @ClimateSignals I also went on TV myself last week, and when asked about the wildfires, I gave the facts. Two times as much land in the West has burned because of climate change. We have 500% more risk for wildfires. Our scientists know this. Why don't our journalists?

Every single Democratic debate has opened up with about 30 minutes on one issue: healthcare.

Leaving @USChamber was a good first step, but until recently, its other trade group @TechNetUpdate didn’t even name climate or clean energy as priorities.

Many other leading companies still support muscle-bound lobbying groups like the @USChamber and @ShopFloorNAM, which are inveterate opponents in Congress of climate action, often contrary to their members’ views.

Fossil fuel companies have spent $1 billion since the Paris Agreement was signed on greenwashing their image.

Lamar Alexander has taken $1.2 million from them, and his "Ten Grand Challenges" look an awful lot like that industry's greenwash wishlist.
The biggest fossil fuel industry players are multinational corporations. Formal climate denial has been largely a US phenomena, and one they're very happy with. But on the world stage they've long had a different approach than funding junk science and crackpot deniers
Industry representatives have been crawling over UN climate talks for years mucking it up. Organizers in the US have shifted the Overton window away from old school climate denial and that's great! What the industry has lined up next isn't any better, and arguably more dangerous

The key to "moderate" climate policy is never, ever mentioning the scale of the problem or what would be required to substantially address it. Instead, you just make "doing something" the metric of success, and, voi la, success is in reach!
The added, extra, super-ironic twist being that even the weak-tea BS Murkowski & Manchin tout here *cannot pass Congress*. Even modest efficiency legislation (google Shaheen-Portman) gets watered down for years & never ends up passing.

Just returned from Bangkok, where nations made little progress towards finalising the Paris agreement on climate change that aims to limit global temperature rises over the next 80 years.

It was my first @UN #climate change rodeo and there were a few things I wasn't aware of
Under Paris, countries agreed to a fairly detailed set of promises to keep global temperature rises under 2C by 2100.

It was the first time all nations - both developed and developing economies - signed up to the same set of climate rules. But they weren't binding
Parties gave themselves in effect 3 years to come up with a text agreed by everyone, ratified, and translated into national law on a state-by-state basis. The idea is the accord isn't legally binding, but the rulebook it provides could be on a national level
