Got to briefly speak to Beto outside Homestead, the vast child migrant shelter in Florida. His ability to emote - that day and throughout the campaign - was perhaps his great political strength. Policy depth and exuding authority less so.
Beto’s “hell yes” I want to take your AR-15 comment will probably be his best-remembered moment of campaign. Republicans jumped on it. He later struggled to explain how he would force people to give them up. But posterity may look favourably on his stand.
Beto finishes the race in joint 7th, equal in national polling to Tulsi Gabbard at 2%.
