Yesterday’s service for legendary civil rts atty #JohnWalker was awesome.
Read our tribute to John Walker, who was one @NAACP_LDF ‘s first interns, a cooperating atty for decades and a board member. It includes wonderful reflections on the life and work of this trailblazing lawyer. naacpldf.org/press-release/…
“He made the Black lawyer a hero in Arkansas,” said Richard Mays, former law partner with #JohnWaker, at yesterday’s funeral in Little Rock, Ark. I often say that those early civil rights lawyers created the image of the lawyer as someone both heroic and cool in our community.
I love this tribute to #JohnWalker from Ted Shaw, @NAACP_LDF ‘s fifth Director-Counsel. “I remember how ppl would come up to John in backwoods catfish and ‘po boy joints and thank him for what he had done or was doing as he represented them.”
At the funeral for #JohnWalker in Ark on Friday, Judge Wendell Griffin, his friend, spoke the unvarnished truth: “bigots, tyrants and those who front for them feared and despised this Black man b/c he loved justice.” Walker would have been pleased by this honesty.
