I’ve written before about one of the most egregious contemporary cases of juror bias in sentencing a man to die - the case of Charles Rhines. At least some jurors appear to have voted for the death penalty b/c Mr.Rhines is gay. Now his execution date is scheduled for Nov 3rd.
Juror deliberations were marked by ugly homophobia. One juror in deliberations remarked that b/c Mr. Rhines is gay, he would enjoy life behind bars in an all male prison.
Will Mr. Rhines be executed b/c he is gay? This is the last chance for the Supreme Court to review this case before Mr. Rhines execution date next week. @NAACP_LDF filed an amicus brief in support of review. I encourage you to read it. naacpldf.org/wp-content/upl
It was C.J., Roberts in our case, Buck v Davis, who rejected a death sentence infected with racial discrimination just three years ago and said our justice system “punishes people for what they do, not who they are.” If this is true, the SCOTUS must review Mr. Rhines’ case.
