Mumbai never really managed to make a cosmopolitan cluster - probably because it is much harder for students from outside to find accomodation there

It is not lack of regulation, it is pointless regulation (eg: capping class sizes at 60 for a program) which has created so many poor-quality universities by artificially restricting the intake of good ones -- can easily run electronics, computing, informatics programs with 200+
US has ~ 4700 degree-granting institutions

We have 30k+ regular colleges + 10k+ AICTE-affiliated(tech/engg/management ones) !!
Full fledged industry created by capping class-sizes.

half decent high-schools in India is barely 10k
(among 25k CBSE/ISC + the huge state-board num)

Got absorbed and distracted by a thread - only to figure out that it was created by a Twitter bot. Was about to express irritation at how such tweets clearly need to be marked as such. And then the epiphany and self-introspection 😅
Nowhere close to being capable of actually creating threads (except where a blogpost is stored & injested & split into tweets) - but still. Aware how even images, video clips, RTs and likes and quips/short-quotes can be a big distraction. Wonder what % of activity is bot-driven.

1. Don't be cynical: Despite the online rantings of bad-faith partisans, there is no evidence that this was intentional nor ideologically-motivated. The conflict in Syria is highly newsworthy & the motivation here was almost certainly to get a sensational, great-for-TV clip.

People have commented on the obvious argumentative straw man that lurks behind this whole article. I‘m interested in something specific.

It’s this paragraph. Let’s take a closer look.
The universal "he" is obviously something many writers today eschew because it’s not really universal. Stephens knows this, that’s why he’s using it.

His brand is to be conservative and a bit of an old, and he probably still takes Strunk & White as prescriptivist gospel. Fine.
Sentence: "Before an idea can be evaluated on its intrinsic merits, it must first be considered in light of its political ramifications."

The rhetorical move here is to pretend there was ever a time when this wasn’t true. In the history if ideas, ideas have never floated freely.

Non-citizen voting basically happened in three waves in American history:
1. Immediate post-revolutionary fervor, but it died down in the wave of constitutional reforms that ran from 1776-1830. Ultimately, "all taxpayers vote" changed to "all adult white male citizens vote"
Key to understand that the post-revolutionary period allowed non-citizen voting under the principle of "no taxation without representation," but taken to a stupidly neoliberal extent: if you don't pay enough in taxes (i.e. aren't rich enough), you don't get a vote!
Allowing (rich) noncitizens to vote was a logical extension of the wealth-based system. That system was (thankfully) removed over the following half century. And in place of "any rich person can vote" (including some states that allowed wealthy women to vote!) came citizen voting
