How many years of experience does one need to be an engineering manager in the tech industry? #engineeringmanager #management #techlead #leadership #cto #techleadership
There are always edge cases, but generally speaking, it takes about 5 - 7 years for a software developer to become an engineering manager.

Once they become an engineering manager, it then takes about 2 - 3 years before they become effective in their roles.
The first year is usually about learning on the job as being an engineering manager is a completely different role to being a software developer.

if you grew up surrounded by other science nerds, especially in the 1980s like us, you might have developed the general notion that this was the future: we'd all be doing science in space. like on Star Trek!

the #ElonMusk fanclub is what happens when that dream curdles.

typical of #management under #capitalism and its tyranny of #time: managers and bosses and #entrepreneurs, from @elonmusk on down, lay enormous emphasis on speed and punctuality—yet none of them give a crap about showing up on time. appointments are for the plebes.

it's a way of flexing social status: if you have *more* social credit in Western society, you have the privilege of making other people wait on you.

#business and #finance propaganda—that is, business #journalism—will *praise* executives who blow off appointment times.

it's a "#power move", an #Alpha Male thing, and all the rest of it—you showed up to an appointment at your leisure, making the underlings wait for hours—that *proves* you're a superheroic, genetically gifted Übermensch like @elonmusk.

everyone else is held to the clock.

Chara, the Pnictogen Wing's sibyl and guardian angel, who has been pouring their energies over the last few years into Twitter commentary on politics and society, has written ably on the subject of #fear and how it's been exploited in political propaganda.

I would like to spend some tweets talking about #fear from a different angle, and comment on the physiological and emotional experience of fear.

fear is a natural human emotion, one that humans share with a broad range of living creatures. it's like a biochemical *alert*.

living creatures, especially creatures as complex and far-ranging as human beings, face an enormous array of different perceptions and circumstances. animals need some method of discriminating between these perceptions and deciding how to act upon them.

hoo boy! well

today has been

I feel I understand so much more about myself.

I was able to share a painful memory with my partner Daria. something I realized I'd never told her *directly*—a memory about stealing razors from my RL father.

because my facial hair was growing in, you see...and I detested the sight of it. probably a lot of #trans folks have a similar experience...'s one of those things you *keep secret*. and I never told RL mom or RL dad about my feelings.

I don't think I could have found words to articulate the feelings even if I had wanted to tell them.

but I wouldn't have said anything about it anyway, because I was terrified of my angry abusive parents. I never told them anything I didn't absolutely *need* to.

there's a notion I've had in the back of our brain, along with the million other useless things that rattle around in there, that I've called "computational monotheism"—basically, a fixation on implementing *singular solutions* to every conceivable problem.

the general idea is that there's only *one* correct way of doing things, and the ideal way to implement the One True Way™ of solving a task is to create some one single entity that completely and comprehensively encapsulates that One True Way™ of doing computer tasks.

I can't think of a better example of this "computational monotheism" from recent history than @elonmusk's goofy idea—the entrepreneurial #ElonMusk cultists like @BillyM2k and @APompliano love the shıt out of this bad idea—for "Application X", the app that does everything.

for the sake of argument, let's take @elonmusk as his word, and believe him when he says that he thinks of @Twitter as a "common digital town square".

I happen to approve of the notion of a common digital town square, and I agree that #Twitter is our closest imitation.

that's not a *good thing*. a "common digital town square" should never be run by a corporation, because corporate governance under #capitalism is invariably two things at once: completely opaque, and authoritarian. @elonmusk rules @Twitter like a tinpot dictator.

there's nothing unusual about @elonmusk in this regard: it's *accepted practice* in #corporate #management for decisions to be made arbitrarily by single persons—i.e. persons acting in the manner of tyrants, who expect their every word to be "made so". people WANT this.

there's a book I've never read. I suspect that my elder sibling Frisk, who in their previous pre-"fallen" life was super into cars, maybe read this book. for a while it was impossible to get away from—every used bookshop and thrift store had multiple copies of THIS.

it's the best-selling autobiography of celebrity CEO Lee Iacocca of Chrysler—

wait, Chrysler doesn't exist any more. now it's...(*rummages*)

@Stellantis. who the everlovin' [expletive deleted] is "Stellantis"?!

anyway, Lee Iacocca didn't write this thing, of course.

William Novak, a famous ghostwriter, did the real work. the guy's still around, it would seem; here's a February 2022 article about him:…

we're used to ghostwriting these days. it's routine deceit, accepted deceit. it's a *web service* practically.

#Stitch Puncture .

Stitch effect is a rare complication where the needle pierces the intrapericardial space from the right atrial side and re-enter the left atria

•Alignment of IAS with reference to RA and LA is key a determinant

•Normally RA & LA Roofs lie in same plane & IAS makes their common wall

•In MS LA can outgrow RA , bringing superior aspect of LA in a different plane with reference to IAS
•The IAS puncture site may overshoot , enter the pericardial space and stitches the non IAS aspect of RA and LA together ,

& Entry into LA occurs through a false pericardial track

Is that what we really want?

It is one of the 3 things that motivate us indeed, but often autonomy can lead to isolation.

So how can we balance the individual needs while staying connected to the team/organisation to stay autonomous?

Autonomy is the urge to direct one’s own life. Without the ability to control what/when/how we work we can’t stay motivated, Daniel Pink writes.

Autonomy doesn’t mean you can do whenever you want to.

Different levels of autonomy are needed depending on context.

Autonomy is just a means to an end: why do we need autonomy?

running #MST3K, "Overdrawn at the Memory Bank", which is a curiosity...…

...that we intend to watch on its own, too. it's got the same producers as the much superior TV adaptation of "The Lathe of Heaven" (@Lady_Lupae knows about that one)

"Overdrawn at the Memory Bank" is based, loosely I'm sure, on a John Varley story, and it stars Raul Julia—so it's pleasant to see an #MST3K film featuring a top-notch actor, albeit a strange and obscure and not very good one.

the future: generic evil corporation.

it's not *unrealistic*, exactly; evil corporate rule is basically what #capitalism has given us.

but Western popular entertainment has been saturated with "evil corporation" imagery of a generic and unconvincing sort—to the point that lots of folks now laugh at the idea.

How can organizations learn from mistakes and develop a learning culture?

A few observations based on my experience over the last 15 years at @WorldBank and other large organizations and some inspiration from @AmyCEdmondson’s research at @HarvardHBS. /1
More than a decade ago, I worked at the @WorldBank on using independent #evaluation results to inform future #strategy and #management decisions.

A big part of my job was to rethink & redesign the way staff & managers interact and respond to receiving evaluation results. /2
My fascination with this topic came from my graduate studies @thehertieschool & my 🎓 thesis on learning from evaluations @UNODC. I studied the literature & developed a framework. In my field work, I interviewed dozens of senior staff over months working there in 2006. /3

The essence of Systems Theory by Dr. Russell Ackoff:

A problem never exists in isolation; it is surrounded by other problems in space & time. The more context of a problem that a scientist can comprehend, the greater are his chances of finding a... solution.

“Every problem interacts with other problems and is therefore part of a set of interrelated problems, a system of problems... a mess.

Managers do not solve problems, they manage messes."
“The more efficient you are at doing the wrong thing, the wronger you become.

It is much better to do the right thing wronger than the wrong thing righter. If you do the right thing wrong and correct it, you get better.”
