Reading the autobiography of Andrew Lloyd Webber (excellently funny, this year's surprising literary find), the man is seriously into good architecture. In one youthful attempt to end his life the young Andrew is literally saved by medieval architecture: “Thank God for Lavenham”.
Andrew Lloyd Webber's first architectural passion was of course the theatre. He and his brother built and managed a to theatre that later came to be the center of an entire imaginary city. With trains of course.
After theatres, his love was ruined castles, abbeys, and English high church Victorian. His comment on Westminster Abbey and Henry VIII are of course spot on.

Timber framing is by far the most ecologically sustainable and economical way of building homes in the widest range of climates, but even inside the category of timber framing (fachwerkhaus, colombage tudor style etc) there's something even more sustainable: round pole timber. —>
Timber frame traditionally uses mature trees sawn to give square lumber of predetermined sizes. It is good use of wood, but there's quite a bit of waste, the trees are heavy and needs machines or horses to transport, and today most building sites use heavy machinery to handle it.
Trees used for traditional timber framing takes a long time to mature, 40-80 years usually, and they are cut when they are becoming their most useful and productive (mature trees grow much faster and store more carbon than young trees). Lumber, while still cheap, isn't free.

Modern construction is characterized by combinations of wildly different materials and hundreds to millions of joints and connections (where failures usually happen). Even when you have the brightest minds and the smartest companies in the world you can't guarantee it will work.
Traditional building makes a point of using materials not because of its strength and economy but also because the ways it fail is fully understood, errors—and there are always errors—do not cascade, errors can be fixed, and they maintenance and replacement is built in.

1/ It’s simple to note: One has to subtract before adding. Give up what’s bad, before thinking about adding what’s good. True for habits, food, news and everything else.
#life 2/ We live in a world with many apparent "signals”.

We’re consuming:
- More info/news/entertainment
- More food
- More social networking
- More things to-do/work...

…than prior generations. It’s making us lazy and critically, disengaged.
#life 3/ It’s unclear what the signal to noise ratio is - it’s a function of one’s own consumption habits.

And separately, we’re prone to setting additional goals too:
- Read good books
- Eat a healthy diet
- Have fewer but better friends
- Work smart

I did something similar to this 5 years ago, in anticipation of EC & @theroots' Wise Up Ghost LP, on tumblr.

(You can still find all those posts if you look, although a lot of the YouTube links etc are now dead ends. It was 40 Days Of EC then, so for 2018 I'm upping it to 45.)
Mostly I will be going chronologically from the early years right up to the present, but it feels right to start out with Costello's 2002 song, "45."
