1/ For anniversary of Kristallnacht I'm posting images from a very special project of the Technical Univ, Darmstadt: virtual reconstructions of synagogues that were destroyed in 1938. We've all seen the photos of burning synagogues; few have seen these gorgeous images. 1: Köln.
2/ Here's what the interior of the Nuremberg synagogue looked like:
3/ Here's the 'reconstructed' exterior of the Fasanenstrasse synagogue in Berlin:
4/ And a very different look, in Dresden, a much more spare interior design, reminds me of the Portuguese synagogue in Amsterdam:
5/ This one, from Kaiserslautern, is/was particularly lovely. (Imagine getting married in a building like this!)
6/ Here are two images of the synagogue in Hanover: from the night of 9 Nov '38, and the 'reconstruction' --
7/ Two images of Munich, one from 1938, and the virtual reconstruction of the interior:
8/ The team that has done this incredible work is the CAD/Architecture Dept at @TUDarmstadt - they have images of all phases of the work for 11 synagogues (one page below) --check out their bilingual site: cad.architektur.tu-darmstadt.de/synagogen/inte…
@TUDarmstadt 9/ If you like these reconstructions as much as I do, please RT -- let's spread these around twitter for others to see and enjoy, esp. on this anniversary (11/9) of such a sad day in Germany, 81 years ago.
@TUDarmstadt 10/ Just discovered a book on this, apparently published by the Darmstadt folks, on Amazon: amazon.com/Synagogues-Ger…
@TUDarmstadt 11/ A team in Vienna has been doing similar work: here's 3 images of virtually reconstructed Viennese synagogue(s), not sure which ones, possibly Leopoldstädter Tempel.
