Today is the 139th birth anniversary of 'Senapati' Pandurang Mahadev Bapat. An important figure in the Indian independence movement.

He acquired the title of 'Senapati', as a consequence of his leadership during the Mulshi satyagraha in the 1920s

Today is the 100th birth anniversary of the great Purushottam Laxman Deshpande - one of the most beloved personalities of the Marathi speaking world.

He was often affectionately referred to just by his initials, 'P.L.' or 'Pu La'.

#PuLa was born in Mumbai on November 8, 1919.
#PuLa was not just an author and a humorist; but also an actor, a musician, a filmmaker, a rationalist, a science enthusiast and much more.

He wrote how Shivaji Maharaj, Tilak, Balgandharva are the most loved personalities of Maharashtra. I think Pu La also belongs to that list.
#PuLa studied at Parle Tilak Vidyalaya, and later at Fergusson College in Pune. He spent many years of his life in Mumbai and later on in Pune. He also briefly worked in Delhi, in the early days of Doordarshan.

I think first and foremost, he was a keen observer of people.

Today is the 164th birth anniversary of Vasudev Balwant Phadke, one of the earliest revolutionaries of the Indian freedom struggle, post 1857.

Bhabha was also the founding director of the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (@TIFRScience) and AET (later BARC).

With his birth name as Erode Venkatappa Ramasamy Naicker, he was born in Erode district in current Tamil Nadu. He dropped the caste suffix Naicker in 1929 and title #Periyar stuck with him thereafter since 1938. He later was called as Thanthai Periyar (Father Periyar).
Born in a Kannada Balija Naidu family, #Periyar and his brother Krishnasamy was named after avatars of Lord Venkatachalapathi (Vishnu) of Tirupati. After his father withdrew him from school for eating at a Chettiar's House, he worked at the family Mandi (godown).

Today is the Punya Thithi of Lokamanya Bal Gangadhar Tilak, one of the tallest leaders of the Indian Independence Movement. An inspiration to a whole generation of revolutionaries from Azad to Savarkar. A writer and thinker too.
Lokamanya Bal Gangadhar Tilak, who famously declared "Swaraj is my birthright", was born to Gangadhar Ramachandra Tilak a Sanskrit scholar and teacher himself in the coastal town of Ratnagiri. A brilliant student in Maths and Sanskrit.
Tilak was a brilliant but equally mischievous student too. Independent in nature, not awed by authority, this was the reason why he was not exactly the teacher’s favorite. And he never accepted injustice meekly.

Alright ayo it's @Claystanman here and for #BlackHistoryMonth we're thinking it'll be a good idea to try and spread knowledge of the history of Black American/African solidarity with and black folks' presence in #SouthAsian resistance.
Bayard Rustin, a gay black man who worked in movements for civil rights, socialism, and gay rights (later known as one of MLK's foremost organizers) organized the Free India Committee & was often arrested for protesting against British colonialism in Africa and India in the 40s.
Bayard's work in supporting the Indian independence movement was reflective of his internationalist approach.

He also participated in the March for Survival at the Thai-Cambodian border in 1980, and in 1982 founded the National Emergency Coalition for Haitian Rights.
