@rebelliousgut @MondayNightIBD @southasianIBD @ibdesis @Empoweringpts9 @DCharabaty @crohnsbabble @LivingWithUmeed @vkckiranpullela @TheMaveilousGut @dunung_ruchita 3/ When my dad passed from #CRC, my family went into poverty & couldn't afford health insurance. Though I was symptomatic as a child, I didn't have a #colonoscopy until 22 when I got my 1st job. That's when I received my very delayed #IBD diagnosis. #MondayNightIBD #SouthAsianIBD

The first GPs I saw were #SouthAsian, maybe they had no understanding of #IBD as it wasn't 'common' back then or seen in British Indians or #SouthAsians ... #MondayNightIBD #SouthAsianIBD

It wasn't until the family GP (who wasn’t SA) saw me + immediately referred me to the paeds unit at the local hospital as an urgent matter. #MondayNightIBD #SouthAsianIBD

@rebelliousgut @MondayNightIBD @southasianIBD @ibdesis @Empoweringpts9 @DCharabaty @ownyourcrohns @crohnsbabble @vkckiranpullela @TheMaveilousGut @dunung_ruchita Although I had the support of some friends & family, the taboo & lack of knowledge about #IBD meant not many knew how to support me. I found it difficult to educate loved ones & am thankful for more resources that are available now. #MondayNightIBD #SouthAsianIBD (1/ )
@rebelliousgut @MondayNightIBD @southasianIBD @ibdesis @Empoweringpts9 @DCharabaty @ownyourcrohns @crohnsbabble @vkckiranpullela @TheMaveilousGut @dunung_ruchita At the same time, I've also met people who couldn't understand how someone my age (17-23) could have such a #disability. The invisibility of #IBD added to this. As a result, my struggles with #IBD were downplayed, minimized & ignored. #MondayNightIBD #SouthAsianIBD (2/ )
@rebelliousgut @MondayNightIBD @southasianIBD @ibdesis @Empoweringpts9 @DCharabaty @ownyourcrohns @crohnsbabble @vkckiranpullela @TheMaveilousGut @dunung_ruchita Given the stigma around #digestive dx & #disability in #SouthAsian community, I felt like I had to make my condition as invisible as possible. These internalized social norms meant I also downplayed my UC to make others more comfortable. #MondayNightIBD #SouthAsianIBD (3/)

TW: police brutality, violence.

it's really disappointing to see @SAHM_UK frame this event as a 'celebration' of the police detached from police violence and failings which impact south asian communities + beyond.

"My son died in suspicious circumstances in October 1997 after being racially abused... [we] experienced a litany of police failures, assumptions and stereotyping based on our colour."

ricky's mum sukhdev is now campaigning for a new investigation.…

i'm sad to see such a seemingly uncritical approach which names a police-affiliated organisation as a partner with no alternative voices.

SAHM states it is inspired by Black History Month, making this 'celebratory' event even more concerning in the context of BLM.

Announcement from @fordnation sank my heart today. As an ER doctor, person of color and #Scarborough native, I feel defeated 😢. The measures are not going to get wave 3 under control. #BIPOC #ERdoc @SHNcares @torontolife @JustinTrudeau @SCMirror 1/
When I landed as an #immigrant in #Canada, my life started in #Scarborough. My parents (#heros) struggled to find jobs that matched their education. That didn't stop them from working hard / hustling even if it meant 2 jobs at times to keep bills paid and food on the table. 2/
My family lived in an apt building that had mostly racialized/middle-low income families (#affordability). Not much social distancing when large crowds wait for elevators (#EssentialWorkers) or use the shared laundry facilities. This pandemic brings back those vivid memories 3/

A journalist friend informed me that a major national mental health organization provided a list of “Psychologists available to discuss Anti-Asian Racism and Violence”. It included many people who have mentored me or have been invaluable to @AAPAonline & #AsianAmericanPsychology.
Please follow all of these amazing Asian American Psychologists and their work: @seachellez @drmichifu @gnhall2 @HelenHsuPsyD @RichLeePhD @DrWillMingLiu @drpriscillalui @deraldwingsue @DrSherryCWang & Dr. Jenny Wang (IG: @ asiansformentalhealth)
Two weeks ago, I contacted the organization to let them know that I was concerned that their list included 9 East Asian Americans and 1 Filipina American and that it was not inclusive of the many South Asian and Southeast Asian American psychologists who are doing amazing work.

@KamalaHarris will never be “brown enough” for you

...and she doesn’t have to be. A thread (1/10)
Imagine bringing home a Black man named Donald Harris as your boyfriend.
Imagine bringing home a biracial woman named Kamala Harris as your girlfriend.

Let’s not pretend these meetings would go well in many of our families. We can’t just selectively accept Black folks. (2/10)
Knowing our communities, Harris likely experienced some anti-Blackness from other South Asians growing up. Sharing this, if true, could show vulnerability and authenticity. (3/10)

I'm working on a piece about social justice movements and lessons from Avengers: Endgame/the MCU. This reflection isn't going to be part of this piece but one thing that still makes me sad whenever I think about the MCU is the erasure of South Asian & Middle Eastern #superheroes.
The Middle East does show up... in the form of Stark Industries' weapons of war and as a vehicle for Iron Man's origin story and character development. We see terrorists as well as innocent civilians in caves and war-torn rural villages in the desert.
In Agents of SHIELD, we see a visibly Arab man (wearing a Gulf headdress) & an Indian man (Sunil Bakshi) as Hydra leadership. Later, there is more South Asian #representation for heroes, but even then, this idea of duality or being torn between good & evil is still present.

We came to know of the dire shortage of #SouthAsian marrow donors when our nephew needed a bone marrow transplant to cure his leukemia. He was 7 y/o & while other patients had pages and pages of potential donors, he had none. We learned through #BeTheMatch.... (1/4) easy it was to become a donor. We all got tested, but sadly no one in our extended family was a match for him. With the help of hundreds of folks who organized drives all around the country, we added thousands of new donors to the registry. Sadly, we couldn’t... (2/4) our precious nephew, but we can save @liynaanwar. In fact, the drives we held brought forth countless lifesaving donors, including our cousin who was able to save the life of 9 yr-old girl w/aplastic anemia. (3/4)
