Here is a full piece on this historic transformation. You plug in your TV or toaster, and power still comes out. But the source of that power in the US has RADICALLY changed over the past decade, even if you have not noticed. ieefa.org/ieefa-update-r…
What this really says is that politics actually matters so much less than economics, when it comes to forcing change in society. It is why capitalism works better than communism. Markets adapt to price and supply way faster than any regulation or gov agency can force change.

These kinds of stories are all the same: Car owners don't want to share public infrastructure. Signatures on petitions are collected. Raise fears that bike lane will harm "public safety." Pressure city officials to block bike lane. Too bad it often works. nwc.news/spring-valley-…
No one group owns the streets. They are an asset we all own. And it is an asset that needs to be shared.
REACTION TO A BIKE LANE FROM ONE RESIDENT: "It’s just dangerous, the city is saying the streets are underused and they are flat out wrong. And tell me, how many bikers are going to use that?"

2. While billed as helping poor communities, Trump's "Opportunity Zones" (OZ) has instead spawned the construction of luxury high rises in areas that are already prosperous. Guys like Kushner are gorging themselves on this lucrative tax-free buffet. nytimes.com/2019/08/31/bus…
3. Here's how it works- OZ allows the super wealthy to avoid paying 15% on their capital gains by redeploying capital gains tax free into OZ construction projects. THEN sell in 10 yrs TAX FREE, eliminating depreciation recapture on the depreciation they deducted fr their taxes.

2/First reaction: it's impossible to say that Opportunity Zones have been a “Bonanza” for anyone. We are in *such* early days. Opportunity Zone funds will not have any returns for ten years, minimum (this was intentional, it’s patient capital!)
3/ The narrative that a “wave of developments” is happening is not yet true. Opportunity Zone funds across the country have raised less than 10% of their goals. It is a new market and most people are very cautious.

Great article by @EricLiptonNYT & @JesseDrucker on Opportunity Zones. As I've argued before, these subsidies for capital investment in state-selected "low-income" census tracts is likely to not be very cost-effective in helping solve urban problems.
As article outlines, & given way tracts selected via state-directed political process, in many cases selected tracts were already gentrifying, & therefore OZs (1) often subsidize what would have happened anyway, (2) sometimes subsidize stuff that doesn't help nbhd residents
Lessons from past nbhd subsidy programs -- enterprise zones, Empowerment Zones -- suggest that in distressed nbhds, cash subsidies alone are ineffective way to solve nbhd problems: hamiltonproject.org/assets/legacy/…
