Replace “become a magistrate” with “make legal decisions on legal cases, including sending people to prison for up to a year” and the problem becomes obvious.

Many magistrates are brilliant people. But they shouldn’t be deciding questions of law or imprisoning fellow citizens.
In the Crown Court, non-legally trained juries decide the facts of a case, having heard the evidence (i.e. what happened? Who is telling the truth?). All questions of law - admissibility of evidence, sentencing etc - are dealt with by a qualified judge.

Magistrates do both jobs.
I should point out for completeness that magistrates have a qualified legal advisor to assist them; but the decision is still ultimately theirs. And in practice the extent to which the advice is followed varies.

1/ Amid Twitter maybe getting rid of the "like" to promote "better dialog" and certainly giving safe haven to nazis and other extremists, a rant:
2/ You probably noticed how, people came forward to say that they'd reported the bomber for violent threats, and Twitter (as always) did nothing and (as always) now apologizes but (as always) won't say how they'll better handle. They won't, and I'll tell you one big reason why.
3/ to address complaints about threats and "improve the dialog" Twitter introduced the "quality filter." You see fewer threats and hate speech. BUT THAT DOESN'T MEAN THERE'S LESS OF IT.

I spent the afternoon immersed in various forms of my own personal therapy. I'm back and I'm ready to tear some shit up.

And I'm just gonna say it: I'm not backing another politician, ever again, who isn't willing to set shit on fire and burn down white supremacist patriarchy.
I'm going to center on people with a history of fighting for justice, people invested in equity, people who know what it means to fight, people who are relentless. I don't give a fuck where they come from or whether they're "experienced."

I'm looking at a coalition of warriors.
And WE make the army--leaders, generals and priestesses alike--as long as we are willing to listen and build and fight.

Make no mistake about it: I don't care if it all ends in ashes as long as what comes next allows nothing like what happened today to ever happen again.
