To say what should be obvious, Trump really isn't on trial in these hearings. The evidence of impeachable offenses has been overwhelming for weeks. What's really happening is a sort of trial of the GOP 1/
Anyone who's been awake for the past three years knew that Rs would defend Trump no matter what. It was also obvious that they would eventually try to smear the witnesses and peddle nutso conspiracy theories 2/
But they did all that ON THE FIRST DAY. And it didn't work, except in the alternative Fox News universe. So I'm wondering what comes next. Do the conspiracy theories get even crazier, accusing everyone of being on Soros's payroll? 3/
Or will there be something even further out of the box? A mass GOP walkout? A staged Brooks Brothers riot? Don't say I'm being silly — they've got nothing, and will do anything to hide that reality 4/

I think that two things happened: social media, and mainstreaming.

On social media: many of us now use tweetstorms to make arguments that would once have been blog posts. At some level this is stupid and inefficient — but more people read them! 2/
Meanwhile, social science bloggers with big audiences have to an important extent been absorbed by more or less mainstream media. Noah Smith write for Bloomberg; The Times has made my blog digitally indistinguishable from the column; Ezra Klein runs Vox, etc. 3/

Yes, and America 2020 very different from America 1992. Highly polarized on values, income classes and geography; the overall economy probably much less determinative than in the past 1/
Notice that the good job growth is mainly in states that are solidly blue or solidly red; in general weaker in swing states 2/ nytimes.com/interactive/20…
A recession would probably have killed any chance of Trump reelection, but growth at roughly the same pace as 2016 leaves things wide open 3/

2. Last Sunday, I partook of the TDS-afflicted Chuck Todd, who is without question a Democrat operative (he once worked on leftwing Iowa Senator Tom Harkin’s presidential campaign).
