Pro tip for those in the online space, learners as well as educators:

1. Cohorts > Self Paced when you're looking at completion rates and accelerated paths

2. Integration with calendars can be powerful

3. Always induce a practical + P2P component (depends on the course ofc)
4. FAQs/repositories, time taken to complete, mark as done, video transcripts, mentors+community, etc are great features/value adds to have

5. What's non-negotiable is content + pedagogy + outcomes

6. If you're a marketplace, unedited rating/testimonials/reviews helps

Break these into 10 x 3-year sprints
Why 3?

Lesser and you might not be "patient" enough to see the fruits of your hard work

Longer and you might holding on to something for the wrong reasons

Was going through my notes.. And came across something that I wrote down when I moved on from my first role.

Right out of college, first professional role, so definitely a lot of hard truths. Listing a couple (cuz I love lists):

1. If someone says you are irreplaceable, either they're lying or you've done something awesome.

2. Make the best of the 9-6, and even better use of the 6-9.

3. PEOPLE >>>>>> anything else

4. Life is hard - stop cribbing!
5. Find a mentor. Again not easy, but goes a long way if you find one this early in your career!

6. Nothing will come to you. Ask and you'll have a chance.

pro tip 2: there has never been a coup in Latin America that didn't have some degree of popular support (ie, not linked to CIA or international capital) . (yes, not even the one against Arbenz, or the two against Aristide, or Zelaya, Lugo -- remember him?).
pro tip 3: if the military intervenes after the president agrees to protest demands (as what happened in Bolivia, when Evo agreed to new elections), its a coup. Pretty much anytime the military intervenes to change regimes, its a coup.

Pro-tip: A note on self-harm and self-help: self-harm happens in multiple diagnoses. It can be acute (cutting, head-banging, biting, etc.) or chronic (skin-picking, eating disorders, teeth grinding, etc.) Both types are neurologically driven and provide a way to meet a need.
Chronic self-harm is a way of attending to generalized discomfort of unknown origin. This is common with sensory processing disorder and alexithymia. It is a quite-literal manifestation of being uncomfortable in one’s own skin.
Stopping chronic forms of self-harm often lead to different forms of self-harm because the underlying needs driving compulsive behaviors are not met. You might be hungry or dehydrated, constipated, overly-full, stressed, bored, over or under-stimulated.

Now that I have a good approach, I actually love writing letters. Crazy, I know!
2/ Since many are in the throes of letters (or just finished) thought I’d share my approach. I welcome your insights, too!

Cool? Cool.

Let’s 1st assume that the person you’ve agreed to recommend, is 1 you CAN recommend. If you can’t? You owe it to them to be honest. But how?

Them: “Do you think you can write a strong letter of recommendation for me?”
You: “I’m concerned that our time together didn't afford me the chance to see you at your best. May I support you in a different way?”

Hopefully, you gave tons of feedback so this isn’t a shock.

Pro-Tip [Refactoring]: Prioritize reading the code over learning about the application domain.
Not so long ago, I worked with a team that was hacking a humongous (>3mloc) perl codebase with their main focus being performance. I set out to show them that the crazy crap I was showing them about TDD and refactoring would be useful.
The critical call was to a method that had to update patient status using a variety of pretty complex logic. We'd brought just that chunk under about 20% test the week before, so I forged in boldly.
