Hahahahaha this guy bought the local newspaper and then made all its employees call him "Papa Doug." I would have lasted 30 seconds before I got fired. Oh yeah, he's also an Elector, as in one of the people who decides outcomes of presidential elections.

It wasn't just one outlet though. There were several, laundering disinfo from the very bottom straight to policy, giving an illusion of consensus or trends that national reporters eagerly fell for in their pursuit of new trends. So then we ended up with those stupid stories
about "dapper" white supremacists. You got played.

btw here's a PSA for anyone who currently deciding on a major and getting talked out of what they find interesting, because it may end up being useless: My ling/anthro/int'l studies (focus: U.S.-Mexico border and LatAm) undergrad degree is proving extremely useful right now.
ditto for my almost-a-master's (my thesis was on identity, migration, and music and it's obsolete as of ~2016, so I have to start it over again), which was in LatAm history with emphasis on the U.S.-Mexico border and modern Bolivian politics with heavy emphasis on decolonization.
until this year it was simply due to my own interests - I put myself through college in my twenties and thirties - and I thought I might be able to specialize in humanitarian and postcolonial journalism around the border and write dense textbooks that no one read.

(1) When I first ran for political office I was 18 years old. The city charter said I had to be 25 years old. When I turned in my petitions, not only to run for office but to change the charter so that all people of voting age could run for office I was told, "no"
(2) My petitions were tossed by the City Clerk as "invalid"
I stayed politically active, became a business owner and waited to turn 25.
Time passed. I turned 29 and once again I made the decision to run for office.
(3) I collected my signatures, filled out my paperwork & was placed on the ballot. Most politicians at the time waited to pull petitions until a month before the election, I chose to get all my paperwork done early. For almost 2 months I was the only candidate on the ballot.
