The fact that that the term "N**ger" is archaic does not lessen the offence, it compounds it. That Prince Andrew said it in private and would not have done so in public makes his casual racism even worse. As does his recognition that he knew the phrase was racist when he said it.
It's never acceptable to ask a person of colour why "ni**er" offends them. This sows doubt over whether using an expression used to dehumanise black men and women throughout slavery and after is wrong. Don't use your privilege to provide excuses for blatant prejudice.
