When you write an essay for a print publication, a lot of material winds up on the cutting room floor.

There were countless events held by Nixon loyalists in the summer of 1974 that I wish I'd been able to get into more.

This one was just two weeks before he resigned.
Those two columns I quoted by liberal Marquis Childs and conservative James J. Kilpatrick, in which they reprinted letters from diehard Nixon supporters, are really worth reading in full.

Some things never change.

Because when that picture was taken at the end of the 1920s, the Klan wasn't just tied to one political party.

It had well-documented ties to Democrats and Republicans alike.

Anyone insisting otherwise is either ignorant or lying.
The bipartisan reach of the 1920s Klan is something historians have written about endlessly.

I did a thread about it here, after reviewing Linda Gordon's recent book on it all:
The Klan's ties to political parties varied by region.

In the South, the KKK was overwhelmingly aligned with the Democrats.

But in other parts of the nation -- especially places where Democrats were linked to Catholics and immigrants -- the nativist Klan sided with the GOP.

Another big question: Rep. Lasko (republican) just asked about this:
Lieu: "The reason you did not indict Donald Trump... is because of the OLC decision. Is that correct?"
Mueller: "That is correct."
Lasko says this contradicts what Mueller earlier said 1/
, that Mueller said on May 29 that he wasn't saying we would have indicted if there was no OLC opinion.
Mueller did not take back what he said to Lieu. If he doesn't take it back, will be big news: despite all his guardrails, Mueller saying he would have indicted but-for OLC op
Would mean the Democrats talking point, that if anyone else but Donald Trump acted this way they'd be in jail, is right.

@jdawsey1 @eilperin @brady_dennis I was a proud INR analyst for nine years. I often appears before Congress to testify in closed session. Never was my analysis subjected to political review. INR is NOT a policy shop. It is an analytic arm. It is absurd that @WhiteHouse or @WHNSC would have any role screening it.
@jdawsey1 @eilperin @brady_dennis @WhiteHouse @WHNSC @whitehouse and Trump can have any policy position they want on climate change. They can even bury their heads in the sand and claim it is all a “Chinese hoax.” But they should not be allowed to supppress expert analysis, or skew it to fit their policy objectives.
@jdawsey1 @eilperin @brady_dennis @WhiteHouse @WHNSC Schoonover shpuld have been allowed to submit his expert testimony on he dangers posed to our national security by climate change. INR was one of the only places that warned Bush about the dangers of invading Iraq. INR was first intel agency to see truth/folly of Vietnam War.

Without diving into this particular case, this type of attorney letter is a stall tactic when you think you're going to lose on the merits
The latter. Assume this were a run-of-the-mill Title VII case; typically Plaintiff's attorneys strike at the point they have maximum leverage, which Ford had. You delay when you hope some external event will turn up useful info instead

She may very well be telling the truth. But the FBI is not going to investigate, because even if we assume she's telling the 100% truth, there's no *federal* crime that took place. It's a dodge.
