In my alternate universe, any child that reads books under the desk at school is given a full scholarship to do whatever they want. If they want, they get to skip regular school and hang out in the library with all the other self-directed nerds. Some elder nerds loosely supervise
“How will you pay for this?”

Self-directed nerds create billions of dollars of value. I’ll just ask for like 0.1% of their stock or something. Whatever they feel like contributing. They’ll want to hire other self-directed nerds too, so it’s a whole self-sustaining pipeline
Imagine not only being a nerdy self-directed child who is *allowed* to pursue your curiosity, but also doing it in a lovely library where a few elder nerds smile at you supportively, ask you genuine questions, and even show you the cool stuff *they* are working on?? Paradise 😭
I have been repeatedly informed that my imaginary alternative universe is simplistic and idealistically naive 😂 I am happy to hear it
As this gets more replies and QTs it’s fascinating to see how many people say things like “I want a sticker”, “pick me teacher”, “imagine your teacher being proud of you for reading trash” - all of which disqualify you from this program, because you’re still seeking approval
Another assumption I keep bumping into is “I would not have learned math if I wasn’t forced to pay attention”. To which I gotta say, I’m sorry you were never exposed to math teachers who truly loved math and helped you see how glorious it is
