The Prime Minister has basically copied and pasted my blogpost into a thread and passed it off as his own explanation.

A blogpost which I had to write to rebut the lies he spent yesterday spouting.

This is weapons grade shithousery.
Eg, he links to the same Prison Reform Trust document that I link to in the blogpost:
And he repeats my observation about the misreporting of Leveson LJ’s comments about the involvement of the Parole Board.

If you wrongly accuse someone of saying something terrible when they haven’t, it makes it that much easier for them to escape scrutiny on the occasions that they have.

Come on, people.
If you get it wrong, be honest, admit fault and resolve to do better.

This is the scandal caused by RUI (Release Under Investigation):

1. The govt tightened the use of police bail to score cheap headlines

2. Thousands of suspected violent & sex offenders RUI’d with no conditions

3. Underresourced police take years to investigate alleged offences
4. Underresourced Crown Prosecution Service take months to make a charging decision

5. Defendants summonsed to court for a first appearance 6 months later

6. Trial listed in the Crown Court a year later due to lack of open courtrooms

7. Trial inevitably adjourned because of 6.
8. Three years down the line, witnesses lose heart and the case ends up being dropped on the fourth trial listing. No justice for anyone.

After today’s fun and games, I’ve been reflecting on this. One should always be alert to confirmation bias, and the possibility that the PM’s own legal advisors drafted his thread without any regard to my witterings has to be carefully considered.

But I just can’t see it [1/6]
If so, it would mean a PM who has never before engaged in any form of detailed legal exposition - his style is famously broad brush and bright colour - decided apropos of nothing to publish a lengthy legal explainer on a complex issue, hours after mine was widely circulated [2/6]
It would also mean he decided, purely coincidentally, to link to the same PRT document that I linked to, and even digressed (as I did) into clearing up a comment by Leveson LJ that was misreported in the press: [3/6]

#Thread My talk last night with @OutlawHistorian has inspired me, so-- here is a #japanesehistory thread about ashigaru, as an introduction for those who haven't heard the term before.

This is a beloved topic of mine, because as you'll see, it's a grey area in Japanese history.
So. "Samurai" is a catch-all term used more in the west than in Japanese. These terms vary, but the short answer is that samurai were low ranking members of the warrior caste, and warriors in general were called bushi. All samurai are bushi, but only some bushi are samurai.
Ashigaru 足軽 is spelled "foot-light." Different clans and regions used terms differently, of course, but generally speaking, ashigaru are a gray area. They were part of feudal armies and part of lordly retinues in the Edo period (1600-1868), but were they bushi?

As per the report MO of foreign PE firms like KKR is to borrow money from Indian Banks at 8-9% and then lend it to Indian businesses at a whopping 20-25% - the high rates of interest makes it difficult for native business to survive or remain profitable to repay the lenders.
KKR is the second largest foreign PE investor in #CCD with 6.07% (1.28 crore shares) after selling approx 4.25% in Feb 2018, making at the time 10.3%. Foreign investors together hold 22.35% stake in #CafeCoffeeDay valued at Rs 724 crore.
