GDP is an imperfect measure. When someone breaks their arm and pays for a cast, GDP goes up. We know air pollution contributes to premature deaths. My colleagues (@PTschofen et al.) argue we should deduct these deaths (gross external damages) from GDP. post-gazette.com/news/environme…

The reason I think it’s worth it to focus a bit on these couple of debate sentences, is that an important climate policy question that no one is asking is: what are your climate resilience plans and what are the appropriate roles for the state & the private sector for adaptation?
I'm grateful Brian included my thoughts in his piece about the debate and managed retreat. I think there's a reason it struck a nerve on ClimateTwitter. First, yes other countries emit GHGs (but US still has a bulk of historical emissions, which all count) earther.gizmodo.com/andrew-yang-is…
So what can the U.S. do about emissions that happen in other countries? Beside building alliances, the U.S. should be leading the world on innovation in clean technology, which can enable other countries to reduce their emissions and create new jobs and opportunities here. 3/

Tomorrow Tesla is making an announcement about autonomy and the future of its driverless technology. So here's a thread about the research we've done so far about the transition to driverless cars.
Driverless cars are defined from no autonomy (Level 0) to fully self-driving anywhere (Level 5). A Level 5 AV can be driverless anytime & anywhere-- a big lift that some experts say won't safely arrive...for decades. (We'll see tomorrow). A current Tesla on autopilot is Level 2.
How can you tell the difference between autonomy levels? Here, I made a chart with emojis, but @darth improved it a lot:

The “oil weapon” is overplayed, but if we want to reduce OPEC leverage over the US, we should provide massive point-of-sale tax credits for electric bikes, cars, SUVs, pickups, medium/heavy trucks, buses, planes, & home heat pumps. Maybe even pay for it with a carbon tax.
Why is the oil weapon played out? Because direct coercion by threatening to withhold oil rarely if ever achieves oil state objectives, and funding terrorism is inexpensive (& doesn’t require oil $). rand.org/pubs/monograph…
The major energy security threat from oil is to the US economy. Because the transportation sector is nearly all oil-powered, a price spike makes transport more expensive & disrupts the economy. We don’t use oil for electricity, so electricity everything. THE END.

The Keeling curve has steadily crossed 450 and unprecedented urbanization increasingly looks like the future of humanity will live in cities. The sustainability of natural resources of water, air, land and energy will be critical to our survival.
In India, the nation has power, states have money and cities/villages have the problems. This mismatch must be corrected by effective interventions in honest politics, effective governments, market, academia and civil society. Problems must be met with resources and intent.

Given that some warnning signs show up it seems a good time to think about some possible policy options we might want to take in case a recession hits. It seems helpful to discuss whether past policy actions in previous recessions have been successful.
A common narrativ, for example advocated by Paul Krugman, is that Germany bypassed the last financial crisis by a good policy response. In Germany most people believe that the short-time work program was causal for the German success of low unemployment rate responses.
So what was the policy response? The (Konjunkturpaket II) measures included frontloading attempts of investment, both by government and by firms (subsidies). Given the planning lags this is reasonable but typically limited in size. More importantly, the government reacted by

First of all: most of the things I will write here are discussed at length in the excellent "GDP: A Brief but Affectionate History" by @DianeCoyle1859 , a book that I consider a masterpiece of economics explained to a general public.
As was said about Hannibal Lecter, if you want to understand evil (or GDP 😉) you need to go back to its origins. Rudimentary attempts to measure national income have existed for centuries. Some of them were actually really valiant attempts, given the state of data at the time
