In 1983, shortly after buying the New Jersey Generals of the USFL, @realdonaldtrump arranged a private meeting with @NFL commissioner Pete Rozelle. This was held inside a suite at Pierre Hotel in NYC. Trump brought along a colleague, who spoke with me. (1)
Trump paid for the suite. When Rozelle arrived, @realdonaldtrump told him he would help destroy the USFL (an emerging threat to NFL) should Rozelle line him up an NFL franchise. Throughout his career Rozelle was willing to roll up his sleeves and deal with unethical people (2) 
But this legitimately horrified him. Were @realDonaldtrump willing to do this to the league he was in, how would he behave in the NFL? How could he be trusted? Rozelle, in one of his finest moments, told Trump, “As long as I’m in this league, you’ll have no place here.” (3)
So when you hear @realdonaldtrump defenders explain how he’s loyal to our nation; how he would never undermine democracy; would never engage in bribery, extortion ... tell them about Donald Trump, the USFL and the NFL. (4)
Final thing: After Rozelle rebuffed him, @realdonaldtrump convinced many of his fellow USFL owners to sue the @NFL. He barked, growled, promised, cajoled, guaranteed. Lawsuit proceeded, USFL won $1 and died. Those USFL owners who followed the Pied Piper are the modern @GOP. (5)
Truly, @TheRickWilson is correct. Everything @realdonaldtrump touches turns to shit and dies. It’s a con. A swindle. Always has been. #ImpeachmentDay
(I almost forgot: @realdonaldtrump agreed to pay a PR guy named Ira Silverman $2,000 to arrange the USFL v NFL lawsuit press conference. He paid Ira $1k up front, promised the other $1k after. Ira called Trump’s office dozens of time to collect, was ignored. Trump never paid)
