I was reminded of a few different things I’ve read over the years. All having to do with writing (and life).

What follows is a thread outlining that...
@jasonfried with some solid suggestions on how to make writing clases better

And, of course, a #writing thread wouldn’t be complete without some @sapinker articles...

@MametDavid, who’s won a Pulitzer for his (dramatic)writing, wrote a memo to his writing staff on what it means to:

- write well and
- write good drama

The memo is brief and it’s worth reading in its entirety.

As instructors it’s our responsibility to center/ground material in a concrete reality, not some abstract distant future.

I said that about “abstract” disciplines (see RT), but it applies to all academic coursework.

That includes writing.

What students want to know is:

- how will learning this information help them today or the moment they walk out of class?

It’s not shortsighted, it’s pragmatic.

@jal_mehta & @sarahmfine capture how to engage students in/outside of class, and how to make the coursework concrete via this @nytimes piece...

In other words, students might struggle with writing (and other classes; e.g., math) because they don’t see the short term value, application and/or relevancy to their lives.

Other than “getting a good grade.”

But, good grades don’t really help in life.

At the end of the day, most of our “formal” instruction/teaching is all practice but no game.
