I know it's Friday afternoon, but I can't stop playing with the new #reInvent2019 features 🤯

Next up: Amazon Athena’s federated queries ❤️

This new feature allows you to query ANY data source and integrate it with your data lake!

[Thread]
First, you connect a Data Source: DynamoDB, DocumentDB, Redshift, CloudWatch Logs, CloudWatch Metrics, Hbase, MySQL, PostgresSQL, Redis, or even custom sources!
The connectors are open-sourced on Github here 👉 github.com/awslabs/aws-at…

So you just deploy a connector once (per region/account) via the Serverless Application Repository (SAR) ⚡
For example, let's pick Amazon DynamoDB!

Athena automatically brings you to corresponding SAR app, where you can review the template and configure a few parameters! ⚙️
To access this feature in preview you'll have to create a special Athena workgroup named "AmazonAthenaPreviewFunctionality" 🤷‍♂️ and attach an IAM policy to your user so you can switch to the workgroup!
Now we can finally query our DynamoDB tables from the Athena console!

When we select the new DynamoDB data source on the left-hand panel, the connector will auto-discover our DynamoDB tables 🎉
And we can run a NoSQL query (DynamoDB.GetItem) as a beautiful SELECT+WHERE statement 🤯
This could greatly simplify the integration of dynamic values (from DynamoDB) as part of our data analytics pipeline, but it also allows us to integrate other relational data from RDS or Redshift without any duplication 🙌
