NYT has a source who thinks this is a reference to John Dowd offering to direct money from the Patriot Legal Expense Fund to Manafort and Gates--a fund he didn't legally control. (screenshot: nytimes.com/2019/12/10/us/… linked story: nytimes.com/2018/09/21/us/…)
Dowd reportedly also wrote in an email back then that he was going to personally donate $25,000 to Manafort's defense before someone appropriately body tackled him.
It's highly illegal, of course, to use a legal expense fund to pressure witnesses not to cooperate with government investigations, which is why the Patriot Legal Expense Fund's trust agreement (or at least the draft they got OGE to approve) forbids it. oge.gov/web/OGE.nsf/0/…

I am heartily tired of asking the New York Times not to contrast a Republican quote with a Democratic vote and leave readers in the dark about the truth. There is witness testimony from a Trump DOD official to support the D’s position, nothing for the R’s. nytimes.com/2019/12/13/us/…
Johnson’s quote states a fact, supported by the plain words of the transcript and witnesses’ testimony. Gaetz’s response is false and also fails to rebut Johnson.

Biggs’ quote is unsupported by evidence or argument. Swallwell’s response is a substantive, factual rebuttal.
People have been asking NYT reporters and editors for decades to stop this fetid practice, which only serves to entrench the toxic polarization that this very article complains of.

What’s it going to take to get you to sort out the facts for your readers, @shearm? @deanbaquet?

The character I would’ve led with in the headline is the billionaire heirs’ Jewish grandfather/great grandfather—a holocaust victim once unacknowledged and now, this year, embraced as the foul nazi deeds of other side of the family finally come to light.
