Some really interesting findings in @LordAshcroft's mega-poll of voters yesterday. Highlights below but you really should read the whole thing conservativehome.com/platform/2019/…
@LordAshcroft Most obvious point is that this really was the Brexit election. If you like/accept Brexit, you voted Tory. If you didn't, you didn't.
@LordAshcroft For those who did vote Tory, getting Brexit done was leading cause - vindicating the Cummings/Johnson decision to go for an election pre-deal rather than post.
@LordAshcroft Similar chart here, though expressed in a different way
@LordAshcroft But it wasn't all about Brexit, obvs. Key Tory success was not just pinching 25% of Labour Leavers, but keeping 66% of Tory Remainers.
@LordAshcroft And looking to the future, there are interesting signs that Labour and Lib Dem vote shares, low as they were, may have potential to go even lower.
@LordAshcroft This chart suggests that there was significant tactical voting - or perhaps rather a continuation of the age-old tendency for anti-Tory voters in a particular constituency to go for whoever's best placed.
@LordAshcroft But for all Boris's - entirely understandable - talk about the pencil hovering over the ballot paper, people were significantly more enthusiastic about having voted Tory (and SNP), and significantly less enthusiastic about having voted Lab/Lib
@LordAshcroft In other words, even the vote share that Swinson/Corbyn did get may have been partly an expression of anti-Tory/anti-Brexit sentiment, as opposed to genuine enthusiasm for that party...
@LordAshcroft Anyway, lots to dig into. Do check it out on @ConHome yourself! conservativehome.com/platform/2019/…
