Great piece, which puts well pretty much what I now feel.
(I’d substitute George Eliot for George Orwell, though.)
Plan for the next few months: to re-read some books that offer a vision of what England is at its best and what it can be.
I’m thinking of Hill’s The World Turned Upside Down; EP Thompson’s Making of the English Working Class; and Middlemarch. But other suggestions welcome!

This piece by @repasi well expresses the doubts I have about the orthodoxy that no agreed UK/EU amendment of the WA is possible by (on the EU side) using the Art 50 procedure. verfassungsblog.de/avoiding-the-n…
The proposition that the EU could do so only by using other, more unwieldy, procedures would in practice make it impossible to move (by agreement) the date on which a transition extension had to be agreed (currently 1/7/2020). So the point is important.
As Rene points out, the proponents of the orthodoxy have to accept that that orthodoxy leads to the existence of an international treaty of practically indefinite duration that cannot be amended by consent. That is so absurd as to cast doubt on any argument leading to it.

Electoral reform: a proposal for consideration by those standing for election as Labour leader.
The result of the 2019 election - a Conservative government given a large majority on 45% of the vote - makes the political case on the left/centre left for electoral reform irrefutable. See also election results going back to the war.

Starts off - as any book on the topic should - with a fascinating discussion of Machiavelli. But so much more than that.
(Disclosure: Mark taught me political theory and classical political thought as an undergraduate. He was inspirational.)

For the record, put me on the side of *opposing* impeachment until we have a full Mueller report in the hands of the pubic, a full slate of public hearings with key scandal figures testifying under oath, and a full accounting of the scope of Trump's high crimes and misdemeanors.
1/ There's no doubt that there's sufficient evidence right now to impeach Trump on a number of—entirely discrete—grounds involving Emoluments, the Oath of Office, Abuse of Power, Bribery, Obstruction, and more. But you can't do anything with all that until it's been put together.
2/ You don't start a trial when you're still gathering evidence—that's not how it's done. Frankly, I believe the *overwhelming* majority of Democrats are in that headspace: that this is something that needs to happen but for which the time isn't ripe. That's critical to remember.

0/ Interesting thread here re: Ethereum, it's usage & future. Just going to add some additional unstructured thoughts and different interpretations
1/ Yes, gas costs/fees is a problem. It's frustrating as a dev to expect some kind of action in your dapp/smart contract to have a certain cost, only to see it go & up down hugely. It's very tricky UX. There's many ways to solve this, check out @peepethApp for example.
2/ Using dappradar as a source for how "active" Ethereum is, is bad. It is self-selected and also measuring DAU in smart contracts/dapps is incredibly tricky. Case in point here ethgasstation.info/gasguzzlers.php. None of the current top gas usage in contracts are in dappradar at all!
