On the stereotype of Indian "culture" in movies/literature

It is often shown how the father gives the bride away (kanyAdAn) and how the bride departs from her family full of tears

Reality: All around me I see kids being much closer to maternal relatives than paternal relatives!
If the bride's departure is indeed "real", then you should see kids growing up with little / no contact with mother's relatives

Yet we observe the opposite

Goes to show how the dominant cultural narrative is in conflict with ground realities
And this is not merely an observation pertinent to our times...

Even 2-3 generations ago, I see a stronger affinity among people to relatives on the maternal side than paternal side
