As #COVID19 makes #landfall in #Nigeria as a #publichealth challenge, it's worth recalling that @Mbuhari was the 1st &, so far, only #Nigerian head of state or President to have made the state of #Nigeria's #healthsystems his reason for taking over power.

When he sent Gen. Abacha ahead to announce his arrival in power on 31 Dec 1983, @Mbuhari asked him to say this:

"Health services are in shambles as our hospitals are reduced to mere consulting clinics without drugs, water and equipment."

Gen Abacha said much more that remains true today:

"There is inadequacy of food at reasonable prices for our people who are now fed up with endless announcements of importation of foodstuffs. Our educational system is deteriorating at an alarming rate"…

thinking out loud about #WWIll in the #nigerian #tech space.
It all started with the then big boys of #innovation
with #ridehailing services. #Uber came into Nigeria and we realized taxis were not enough. whether it was because it was a popular international service
or because it had a good PR for representing your class or status, truth is #uber really did solve a problem. instead of walking to parks or bus stops looking for a taxi, your ride comes to you.
You have the right to choose what ride comes to pick you up based on your pocket
let's not even talk about convenience, the good Air conditioning that these guys used to offer during rides (not certain anymore) or the fact that it gave people the ability to have multiple jobs/sources of income once you have a vehicle.

So, at this time in the 21st century, @HiltonAbuja infantilises hardworking #Nigerian women & smears them at the same time with claims of a "company policy" that precludes women from being served at its establishment unless they are accompanied by a man?!
Yesterday evening, on #HumanRightsDay of all days, my sister, @IerJonathan, goes into a bar on the ground floor of @HiltonAbuja at the end of a long day of travel, settles in to request modest refreshment. She also has business to transact. This is at the Lobby Bar.
So, she calls the attention of a waitress for a menu. The waitress approaches & quietly disqualifies her from service. According to this waitress, "company policy" of @HiltonAbuja precludes her from serving females who are unaccompanied by a man.

It has been difficult for me to engage w/ largely dismissive criticisms of #Nigeria’s move to close its land borders with #Benin & #Niger to address rampant smuggling and #Benin’s systematic flouting of Ecowas trade protocols & other treaties signed w/ #Nigeria.
But I feel this issue is too important not to try to improve public understanding about what’s at stake and why the status quo was untenable. So, what follows is a #thread about border security & rules-based trade, which is what the border closure is about at its core.
I’m going to state upfront that I will not engage re this issue on this medium. Instead, I’ll be doing a Facebook Live on Monday w/ @EurasiaGroup colleague Willis Sparks @ 11am EST/5pm Lagos. Please send (constructive) questions w/ hashtag #NaijaBorder & we will address them.

One of #Nigeria's leading road transporters, @PMTNigeria has about 65 terminals in 26 states, employing thousands directly or indirectly & facilitating integration across the country. It's supposed to be 1 of those SMMEs that govt all over the country shd support
Early in 2018, as the rat-race towards #NigeriaDecides2019 got underway, the then governor of Imo State, @realRochas, approached the Chairman of @PMTNigeria, Chief for support to his partisan political plans. The company told the governor it did not do partisan politics
The week after the company rebuffed @realRochas, the Governor, in an act of reprisal, ordered the sealing up of the company's loading bay in Owerri, capital of Imo State. The company's workers & contractors in the State were put out of work. It was to be sealed for over 1 year.

The #Nigerian judiciary is often said to be "The last hope of the Common (Wo)Man". It's a venue for deliberative decision making & authoritative statement of the standards that govern us all. The quality of decisions coming from there in recent times is now cause for concern....
4 recent decisions illustrate a worrying pattern of perverse reasoning from #Nigerian courts & tribunals. In Jan 2019, the Code of Conduct Tribunal, a body controlled by the executive arm, issued an ex-parte order to suspend the Chief Justice of #Nigeria…
A lot of attention is rightly paid to the seriousness of charges against Chief Justice #Onnoghen. But precisely because of that, they deserved dispassionate due process. Now, few ppl will accord them serious weight because of the deep deficiency of process…

Sudan matters to the stability of Africa in a way that arguably no other country does. It is a complex, big, fragile country with borders to the most complex & fragile regions of the continent. The potential for regional stability contagion are huge if Sudan is distressed
Sudan is critical to stability in the #Sahel, North Africa, the #GulfOfAden, the #NileBasin, the #GreatLakes, East Africa; the Horn of Africa, Central Africa & #WestAfrica. There's no other #African country whose wellbeing can so ripple through the continent like Sudan.

I’ve seen a lot of commentary to the effect that violence and inconclusive elections in the 2019 cycle is evidence that #Nigeria is witnessing a democratic regression. I understand this feeling, but strongly disagree. #NigeriaDecides #Thread
This narrative is mostly driven by two factors: (1) the sense that 2015 was a watershed because an incumbent lost (this was a big deal!) and (2) the larger number of inconclusive elections in the 2019 cycle.
2015 *was* indeed a watershed. The introduction of the smart card readers made it much harder to manipulate voting outcomes than it had been in the past and helped Buhari unseat the then incumbent. That was a huge deal and a big positive for #Nigeria’s democracy.

Today is #WorldKidneyDay, so here is a thread about living on #dialysis & #OrganDonation. My name is Belinda Otas. I’m #African. I’m #Nigerian. I'm #Benin. I’m #British & I’m #Black. Beyond the nationalities or passports with my name, I also believe in our shared humanity.
I was 16, when I was diagnosed with End Stage Renal Failure (ESRF.) I had no idea what was happening to me because at the time, it made no sense. However, I remember the pain of that period like noonday. I lived on dialysis until i was 22. #dialysis #OrganDonation #renalhealth
It took over my teenage years. I don’t remember having much of a life as a teenager because dialysis was 3x a week & every session was 4hrs. Add the time it takes to recover from being exhausted by the process, my day was pretty much over. #dialysis #OrganDonation #renalhealth

Nigeria’s 2019 Election:
What Are We Missing?
Vote buying. Thuggery. Rigged primaries. Logistical
failures. Official misconduct. Ballot box snatching.
Budget delays. Voter apathy. Intimidation. Turnout
suppression. Inconclusive results. Bribed officials
These and many other challenges routinely undermine the credibility and smooth conduct of elections in Nigeria.

So, @Fmohnigeria says nearly ⅓ of #Nigerians may have mental illness. To the average #Nigerian, this means we have epidemic of "madness". But this is a measure of both how stressful the country is & how little attention we pay to the things that matter…
#Nigeria's inhumane dysfunctions which contribute to its national epidemic of mental illness are some of the legacies of a ppl unable to recover from the dehumanizing regimentations of prolonged military rule. Worse happens though.... These dysfunctions also cost lives
#Nigeria's dysfunctions do kill- ystrday, 5 graduates of the Law School (4 male & 1 female) preparing to be called to the Bar end of Nov 2018 were killed in a needless & avoidable car crash in Bwari, Abuja. Instead of looking forward to a bright future, they're in the mortuary
