Hastily put together 100 favorite songs of the year list here we go! Will be posted in fits and spurts bc I got shit to do but I also want everyone to hear these songs bc they really stuck with me this year. Real short explanations for each pick.
100. JAEWYNN - “RIGHT NOW” simply a banger like oh my god what else can you ask for with this?
99. Left at London - “6 feet”
I’m ready for her new album in 2020. This song was catchy and bouncy!

98. Jamila Woods - “ZORA”

Best 2019 single from her really good album Legacy! Legacy! Which you gotta check out.

97. Yola- “Faraway Look”

Thx to my friend Haley for the rec. this is a beautiful and soulful country tinged ballad.

96. Better Oblivion Community Center - “Exception To The Rule”

The folkier tracks from their album were also really good but I liked this bleep bloopy one

95. Raveena - “Still Dreaming”

Just listen to it. It sounds magical and dreamy just like the title suggests. A voice like lavender. Listen to her album “Lucid”

94. The Acid Flashback At Nightmare Beach - “Welcome To The Shitshow”.

Really catchy really affecting really cool lofi emo music Lonny killed it this year! Excited for whatever they have planned for 2020.
93. Liz Phair - “Good Side”

She’s back at it again y’all can’t wait for 2020

92. Big Thief - “Cattails”

I don’t entirely get them the way many of the Stereogum commentariat does but I really loved this song. Just really beautiful, quirky, emotional folk music.
91. Haim - “Summer Girl”

Just a really beautiful really well written soft pop rock song.
More later
Merry belated Christmas y’all! I just ate McDonalds’ egg & cheese biscuit for the first time in 2.5 years and I’m ready to see if I can blast through 20 more songs. Let’s try!
90. BROCKHAMPTON - “Dearly Departed”

This album was amazing whatever anyone says. Dom’s part of this song made me cry the first time I heard it.

89. DUMP HIM - “Dykes To Watch Out For”

Rock music ain’t dead. It’s just the old established acts who are stale. DUMP HIM are one of the very exciting new acts! This song SLAMS!

88. Megan Thee Stallion ft. Nicki Minaj and Ty Dolla Sign - “Hot Girl Summer”

This song is just so fun! Everyone brought it!

87. angelic milk - trust no 1

Nothing like a simple, catchy, poppy, lofi indie rock song. Love her vocals!

86. SOAK - “Knock Me Off My Feet”

One of the prettiest voices in indie music. Such a catchy song!

85. Sharon Van Etten - “Seventeen”

Such an emotionally potent and reflective song about getting older and really well written! Amazing hook and it builds beautifully.

84. Billie Eilish - “bad guy”

No other pop star is making music quite like her. The really quiet and subtle vocals, the really snappy production. At times haunting, at times memey. I’m just really excited to see what she does next.

83. Cowboy Black - “Fine”

This really short album floored me in its 27 min run time when I first heard it this year. A really beautiful and warped take on R&B sounds if you’re not listening you need to rectify that.

82. MAGDA - “Naomi Campbell”

She’s an underground pop sensation who would be making much more of an impact if twitter would stop banning her for stupid reasons. Clubby, sexy, energetic, intoxicating pop music.
81. Ciara - “Thinkin Bout You”

It’s just been really interesting to see the various forms shes taken as a pop star over the last decade. A perfectly written straight-up meat-and-potatoes pop song was a great way to top the 2010s off for her!
80. CHAI - “Fashionista”

@Blochead4real they’re punk

79. Hypat1a - “Die 4 U”

Really woozy trippy psychedelic pop song that reminds me of like Kesha being produced by Arca or something I love it so much. Also great music video.

78. Kesha ft. Sturgill Simpson, Brian Wilson, and Wrabel - “Resentment”

Speaking of Kesha, I’d have never predicted she’d double down on “Rainbow”’s country side and make an emotional country ballad with a strange list of collaborators, but it’s so good
77. Tinashe ft. MAKJ - “Save Room For Us”

Nashe’s back!!! So glad she’s found herself again after suffering through label hell. This song is totally back to the heart of her original sound!
76. Baths - “Wistful (Fata Morgana)”

Uggghhhhhh I love Baths so much one of my biggest inspirations. I love when dance music incorporations piano-y/harp-y sounds.
75. Lil Uzi Vert - “Futsal Shuffle 2020”

Only he could make this whole song concept work. And it works so well.

74. Drainpuppet - “Sleep Well // Vivian’s Lullaby”

Her album “Bliss” was one of the most slept on albums of this year, and this song is just truly gorgeous. I imagine watching a sunset in the Adventure Time universe feels like this song.
73. BBYMUTHA - “Sick”

My hometown hero. One of my favorite rappers period. Every so my she makes she kills it. One of the best music videos of the year.
72. Kyunchi ft. Miss Toxic - “Shibuya 109”

Kyunchi makes the funnest pop/dance/electronic music you’re going to hear this year and this song was my fave they released this year! 💖

71. Orville Peck - “Dead of Night”

Masked cowboy hero despite all odds, breathes life into rotting corpse of “country music by men” with a queer swooning moon kissed slowburning ballad
70. Emily Reo - “Ghosting”

Emily Reo’s “Only You Can See It” is the best pop album you probably didn’t hear this year so please fix that by starting with this twinkling subversive banger.
69. Alex de la Pampa - “Elle Les Crie”

Whatever I’m biased. Alex is my friend and he co-produced my album. But he also blessed us with so much amazing music this year. This quirky pop tune is the first of two of his on my list. Plz stop sleeping on him.
68. Lil Nas X etc. - “Old Town Road”

One of the only good things about the timeline we are on: we exist at the same time that a song like this can quietly be released and become the longest running no. 1 ever & say fuck u to the country establishment.
67. Don’t Do It, Neil - “Strawberry Cake”

Mabel KILLED it with her album “B/X” and this is my favorite intro of an album in 2020. Set the tone for the really haunting pop songs that followed it. Exact opposite of what u’d expect of a song with this title.
66. nadeishiiko- “Baby Phat Debit Cards”

My favorite pop songs are the ones that break all the rules for how a pop song is supposed to sound and come out sounding better than the ones that follow the rules.
65. Empath - “Hanging Out Of Cars”

Loved this album so fucking much. The closest it seems I’m gonna get to a second album from Perfect Pussy, but like a little more catchy which I really like! Such a fun song!
64. Bon Iver - “Hey, Ma”

About as good a song from about as good a follow up to one of the best albums of the decades as someone like me with really unreasonable expectations could ask for. Great encapsulation of all the shades of Bon Iver.
63. High Sunn - “Three Words”

Silky, syrupy, shoegazey goodness

62. Katy Perry - “Never Really Over”

I thought I’d never like another Katy Perry song but here I am liking another one. This one’s better than any she made with Dr. L*ke. Perfect chorus.

61. Sky Ferreira - “Downhill Lullaby”

Even if this is the only taste of Masochism I ever get, it was such a beautiful taste. Sky blends orchestral and grunge into a really ghostly ballad.
More later.
60. Kehlani ft. Dom Kennedy - “Nunya”

Kehlani has got such a beautiful voice, and each part of this song leads so well into the next part. That pre-chorus to chorus transition 🥰

59. Katie Dey - “Stuck”

First of two songs from her absolutely astounding album about self acceptance. Her warped warble still gets me every time. Most poppy shes ever sounded and she sounds great! 💖
58. Chloe Hotline - “Across the Room (Summer 2)”

I think her music represents Gen Z’s aura very well. Somber, despondent, a “mood” beautifully and succinctly chanted over an atmospheric beat. I love it so much! Y’all gotta get with it she’s a star!
57. 2 Chainz - “Money In The Way”

2 Chainz was my favorite part about Chance’s “No Problem” (altho truthfully everyone brought it) but this song is like that song if it was all 2 Chainz which is something I’ve always wanted
56. Asbestos Lead Asbestos - “Gaslighting”

This song melted my brain in the best possible way it’s literally mesmerizing omg please listen
55. Sir Babygirl - “Everyone Is A Bad Friend”

They have one of the most interesting voices and they bend it in some really interesting and cool ways to fill out this kind of spare instrumental. Next level catchy!
54. Selena Gomez - “Lose You To Love Me”

I know some ppl don’t like this one but I get literal chills every time. It’s another one of those songs that breaks the rules and becomes even more beautiful as a result.
53. Taylor Swift - “Death By A Thousand Cuts”

I thought this album was gonna be a train wreck from the singles, but the album became a return to form of sorts. This deep cut is on the same level as her best stuff to me.
52. JPEGMAFIA - “Jesus Forgive Me, I Am A Thot”

A beautifully confusing single from a beautifully confusing album. Peggy is in his own league.
51. Burial - “Claustro”

Burials best song in like 6 years. What id do for another studio album. If this song is any indication, he’s found some new energy!
50. Beige Monk - “I can be yr neptune”

I love shin’s music so much. It’s apparently informed by all these weird math and made up languages that I’m too dumb to comprehend, but it comes out in this beautiful Lynchian MGMT/M83 hybrid space and it’s perfect
48. default genders ft. No Rome - “when it’s over”

This album is literally perfect. This song so pillowy and emotional and hasn’t left me since I first heard it. It also reminds me of Amerie’s “1 Thing” which makes me so happy. Jaime & No Rome killed it.
47. Bad Bunny - “Caro”

Is he on here bc he’s my celebrity crush? Partially. This song is also super catchy and does a lot of cool work to challenge toxic masculinity. Frfr best music video of the year.
*oops this is meant to be 49! Typo bc I’m human! Sorry xx 😓
47. Dorian Electra - “Adam & Steve”

A weird and amazing and campy and beautiful in every way song with an awesome message from one of the years best and most adventurous pop albums by a pop star made for this moment.
*oops this is meant to be 48! Typo bc I’m human! Sorry xx 😓
46. The 1975 - “Frail State Of Mind”

If this is any indication this next album is going to be their best yet. The amorphousness of their discography is something that inspires me. They’ve worn so many coats in their time as a band.
45. Dani Lee Pearce - “Deep Red”

Dani’s new album MUST be on your radar for 2020! Her two singles are among the best songs of the year (the other one is higher up). No one else can do what she does. Her music is catchy, but so raw and I love it!
44. Charli XCX - “Next Level Charli”

Charli’s self-awareness is one of her biggest assets as a pop star, and that she literally made an anthem about being a Charli XCX fan is truly “next level Charli.” I couldn’t ask for more.
43. pronoun - “stay”

this is 1 of those bands where I loved 1 song (“wrong”), but I was scared 2 listen 2 another song bc mayb the songs wouldn’t be as good. I’ve had this happen 2 me w buzz bands b4, but I’m glad I listened this time. “Stay” is perfect.
42. Carly Rae Jepsen - “Now That I Found You”

What more can you want from her than to release a collection of scientifically precisely perfect pop songs like this one every few years?
41. Kizuna AI (prod. Yunomi) - “Sky High”

Yunomi is one of the best producers out there, and they made a perfect song for AI pop idol avatar, Kizuna AI. The trap high hats that carry this along get me every time. Perfect construction.
More later night night
40. Hannah Diamond - “Love Goes On”

She finally gave us her debut this year with a really beautiful ballad about finding yourself after a breakup. Theatrical! Brilliant! I hope there’s more where this came from before much longer!
39. Normani - “Motivation”

This is a perfect song encapsulating Normani’s potential as a solo artist. Sounds straight out of 2004 or 2005 and I’m ready for this sound to make a comeback in the mainstream! 2020 could be Normani’s year!
38. Alex De La Pampa - “Thème du Printemps”

Alex released so much music this year but my fave was his album “Préambule...” which was so full of lush songs abt seasonal & environmental changes, and my fave track was this uplifting, serene instrumental cut.
37. Solange - “Sound Of Rain”

Gorgeous track from her beautiful, ephemeral sophomore album “When I Get Home.” I think the closest Solange is gonna get to a straight up banger, but I love Solange’s subtle approach to the sound.
36. Taylor Swift - “Lover”

What makes a good TSwift song these days is if it’s inescapable enough to nab itself a limited spot on a hypothetical greatest hits album from her vast discography. “Lover” nabbed it for sure. Perfect love song.
35. Kitty - “Mami”

Nothing was as satisfying to me as watching Kitty come back stronger than ever with her best and most self-assured album, Rose Gold. “Mami” is an endlessly satisfying dance pop track from it which I love so much.
34. Lana Del Rey - “The Greatest”

Lana turned a new leaf this year with apocalyptic singer songwriter music, and released a stone cold classic album and its centerpiece, the melancholic ode to the end of everything “The Greatest”
33. Nilüfer Yanya - “In Your Head”

Her songs are always amazing always laid back and effortlessly cool and I love them
32. Halsey - “Nightmare”

Halsey’s best song by a mile. Angry! Powerful! Literally the Evanescence sound reinterpreted for the late 2010s post Me Too world. A chorus you can just scream along to. Sad she didn’t continue with this sound.
31. Vagabon - “Flood”

Her self titled album was different from the acoustic indie rock that broke her thru, but it still carried all the signatures that have come 2 define her sound, namely her pointed lyrics & expressive vocals best showcased on this one
30. Yakui - “Meltwave”

Yakui is truly on her own wave making some of the most innovative and experimental music of 2019. Sounds like the banjo & kazooie soundtrack running through a washing machine and it’s the coolest shit on earth. inspires me everyday eatdis.bandcamp.com/track/meltwave
29. Katie Dey - “Shell”

Truly gorgeous cinematic ballad that made me cry so many times this year Katie’s music is perfect and incessantly inspires me I can’t thank her enough for existing and offering her art to the world
28. Jaye Naima - “Kitty Drop”

FUCKING BANGER!! Like I’ve been addicted since I first heard it. Reminds me of my favorite Playboi Carti songs but like way cuter, fiercer and more girly
27. Angel Olsen - “Lark”

I feel like this song is like screaming into the void and it’s so intoxicating I love it. I love my Angel Olsen songs long and loud with many movements and meditative and melancholy and “Lark” gives me all of that!!!
26. Charli XCX ft. Troye Sivan - “2099”

This is the song that was the most forward thinking vision of pop from Charli. Production like I’m in a simulation. A hook like dopamine. It’s perfect but it still wasn’t the best from the album crazy enough
25. LoneMoon - “why me”

Her new album released literally days ago completely upended my lists it’s so good. Y’all can’t afford to miss out on listening to “andromeda.” Simply inspirational first track. And the way it leads into the next one—ecstasy🥰
24. FKA twigs - “mirrored heart”

If you somehow—unlike me—weren’t destroyed when you first listened to this song, idk how you did it. Simply devastating but so gorgeous and warped in all the ways I’ve come to love from twigs.
23. Backxwash - “BAD JUJU”

WITCHY BANGER! God I love her so much oh my god thank you so much for the amazing album and especially this song which is my go to soundtrack for when I’m angry and need to decompress.
22. Vampire Weekend - “This Life”

The best Vampire Weekend song. Sounds like a soundtrack 2 a bubbly 70s sitcom. iLoveMakonnen is the best songwriter on planet earth and they need 2 thank him dearly for it. The sped up snare drums in the hook are so nice.
21. Mani Blü - “Round & Round”

That this song isn’t one of the biggest pop songs of this year is a travesty. Mani delivered this year! Her voice sounds vintage, but it works like magic paired with this PC music style production. She’s the future.
Top 20 later
20. Vze ft. Ayesha Erotica & Popgoth - “PMS”

I swear half this song’s streams are mine. I listened all year since the summer. Ayesha shows her genius. Popgoth’s verse is so fun! Vze killed it on production. Flipping “PMS” to mean “pink mini skirt” omg
19. Caroline Polachek - “Door”

In her first solo release under her own name, she fashions a pastoral version of pop all her own. There’s like 5 other songs from “Pang” I could’ve put here, but the outro to “Door” is euphoric. Idk how her vocals do that.
18. That Kid - “Booty Call”

The rest of the songs on my list after this one have a sad or chaotic energy. “Booty Call” is the most joyous song I’ve heard all year, and it’s probably the song I most sought out to feel happy. Pure bliss!
17. Rico Nasty & Kenny Beats - “Cold”

The hardest thing I heard this year. The way Rico growls in that chorus gives me chills every time. Kenny’s amazing production as always. She’s shared some samples of what she’s working on for 2020 & omg I’m excited.
16. Madeon - “Be Fine”

Probably the only EDM artist who still excites me to this day. Probably because there’s a soulfulness and a keen understanding of pop songwriting that just makes me feel encouraged. This song is a perfect example of that.
15. Wicca Phase Springs Eternal - “Just One Thing”

This is 1 of those songs I heard really early this year & just kept gng back to. My upcoming album 4 sure isn’t witch house emo trap, but I think the effect this song had on me is etched into it. Love it.
14. ECCO2K - “Peroxide”

How he can make a song about the isolation he feels from being marginalized sound so blissful and transfixing is a feat. Emotional atmospheric trap ballad from another universe. You must listen to his album “E”
13. Lonelyspeck - “My Angel Walks Before Me”

Their “Abyssal Body” EP was one of the coolest things I heard this year & this song has such gorgeous lyrics and such propulsive & explosive production it’s beautiful like watching glass shatter in slow motion
12. default genders ft. beth sawlts - “sophie (emphasis mine)”

I can’t imagine a world without this song it’s so beautiful and revelatory to me. It’ll always hold such a special place in my heart. magicalpessimism.bandcamp.com/track/sophie-e…
11. Dani Lee Pearce - “I’m Gonna See My Abuser Again”

Dani introduced her forthcoming record with one of the most devastating & powerful songs I’ve ever heard about coping with trauma in these moments where u can’t avoid who or what traumatized u.
10. Clairo - “Bags”

If u’d’ve told me the girl who wrote the syrupy twee “pretty girl” & “flamin hot cheetos” would do a sharp left turn & make a song so austere & melancholy & frankly gorgeous like “bags” I’d’ve thought u were lying. I’m glad she did.
9. Ariana Grande - “ghostin”

That she blessed us w/ a 2nd amazing album so soon after releasing her best album only a yr ago featuring this amazing ballad about gracefully facing the pain she’s endured over these past years is so incredible. Only respect.
8. Charli XCX ft. Christine and the Queens - “Gone”

Perfect songwriting on both artists’ behalf & genius producers led by AG Cook created a perfect capsule of “Charli”’s beautiful collaborative universe. A song for the ages.
7. Black Dresses - “Thru the Void”

A fucking RIPPER off one of the best albums of this decade, Black Dresses’ “THANK YOU.” A warped industrial pop masterpiece where Ada and Devi scream their pain. Raw, scraggly, beautiful, loving song
6. kate can wait - “fantasmeo”

Breathtaking ghostly folk song so powerful to me I was swept off my feet the moment I heard it. Kate—with Dani Lee Pearce & Backxwash & Dont Do It, Neil—are proof that most of the best albums of 2019 came out on Grimalkin
5. 100 gecs - “money machine”

Everything I thought I knew abt music changed when “1000 gecs” dropped. Songs abt stupid horses. Songs w screamo and trance interludes. & at its best songs about lil piss babies w such big game for sum1 w such a small truck.
4. Fell From The Tree - “Like I See You”

This is going to be one of those songs that isn’t appreciated now, but it’s going to be beloved in the future when Tree becomes the biggest thing ever. Truly a classic, perfect, poppy emo song. Treemo 4 life. fellfromthetree.bandcamp.com/track/like-i-s…
3. (Sandy) Alex G - “Gretel”

Mesmerizing, perfect encapsulation of the mystique of Alex’s music. The weird chords. Really simple catchy melodies. Heavy & light at the same time. Psychedelic. 1 of my fave artists & the best song from 1 of his best albums.
2. Shygirl - “BB”

CATCHIEST! MOST EXHILARATING! MOST BANGING! SONG! YOURE GONNA HEAR! THIS YEAR! PERIOD! BET ON IT! 🤯🤯🤯🤯
1. FKA twigs - “cellophane”

She blew up bc of songs w production from another planet but she became a legend by stripping it all away and letting the true star of her songs—her devastating vulnerability—steal the show. Bravo, twigs. She owned 2019.
These have been my thoughts on my favorite songs of this year. & if I’ve learned anything over the years I’ve made these lists it’s that I probably missed a metric fuck ton of amazing 2019 shit. Link me to more cool songs from this year and educate me. Thanks for reading along.
