Ok then: Christmas shopping! Here's a list of great history books I read this year, not all of which were published this year, for all of the uncles/nieces/best friends on your list who find it useful to contemplate the past.
First up: David Blight's Frederick Douglass. One of the best documented men in the 19th century, who gave dozens of speeches and wrote voluminous letters as well as the famous diary. Blight brings him alive. Then you can visit his house in Anacostia

The Anarchy, by @DalrympleWill. Just came out, I sped through it. Truly unbelievable history of the East India Company, the enterprise that conquered India. Lots of curious parallels to the offshore money world today.

I have a family member involved in chain restaurants who is made apoplectic by the idea that only old industrial jobs - steel, coal - offer good salaries, benefits... I've come to sympathize with him.
Why are coal miners inherently more worthy of political attention than chefs? Why do polluting, extractive industries have to be subsidized and pampered by the government?

ok but vmin au where taehyung can see numbers above people's heads which show the days they have left before they die. years pass and he's mostly learned to live with it, at least until he meets jimin: his cute new roommate who has a startling zero but is somehow very much alive.
it goes like this:

taehyung is six when he notices the light blue squiggles floating over his mother's head. he asks her about it but she just smiles, turning the question back at him and making him go on a tangent, until all talk of blue squiggles fade into that about school.
it goes on like that for a while. even when taehyung learns about what they are - numbers, and more than he can count sometimes - people simply smile and humor him, before shifting the conversation to his studies or his friends or the latest toys he likes to play with.

1. "Fire and Fury: Inside the Trump White House" by Michael Wolff. Yes, I hate-read this book in a matter of days. Problematically, Bannon comes across as an articulate, insightful source and not an arch nationalist parasite. Will Wolff's depiction be hagiography in the future?
2. "The Invention of the White Race, Volume 1: Racial Oppression and Social Control" and "The Invention of the White Race, Volume 2: The Origin of Racial Oppression in Anglo-America" by Theodore Allen. Who knew how important Bacon's Rebellion (1676) was to the history of racism?
