Ok then: Christmas shopping! Here's a list of great history books I read this year, not all of which were published this year, for all of the uncles/nieces/best friends on your list who find it useful to contemplate the past.
First up: David Blight's Frederick Douglass. One of the best documented men in the 19th century, who gave dozens of speeches and wrote voluminous letters as well as the famous diary. Blight brings him alive. Then you can visit his house in Anacostia

The Anarchy, by @DalrympleWill. Just came out, I sped through it. Truly unbelievable history of the East India Company, the enterprise that conquered India. Lots of curious parallels to the offshore money world today.

@DalrympleWill Napoleon: The Man Behind the Myth by Adam Zamoyski. Hugely readable, light on battles and long on familial intrigue. It's still a mysterious story, amazing that one man walked into the French court and just took it over

@DalrympleWill The Road to Freedom, by @TimothyDSnyder. Exactly the eccentric, ambitious back story that you want to read: how Ukraine's history came to become intertwined with American history, plus an interpretation of Russian politics that you won't find elsewhere

@DalrympleWill @TimothyDSnyder Also, don't miss @simonmontefiore's Romanovs, the story of a dynasty whose members had an immense amount of trouble handing over power. Just about every succession was a crisis...sound familiar? Plus a huge amount of classic Sebag detail...

@DalrympleWill @TimothyDSnyder @simonmontefiore Ian Kershaw's The Global Age is a useful account of postwar Western Europe. Since that world is on the brink of disappearing, you might want to remember how it got put together in the first place....reviewed it here: nybooks.com/articles/2019/…
@DalrympleWill @TimothyDSnyder @simonmontefiore While you are at it, read Crashed by @adam_tooze. Really ambitious first attempt to explain the past couple of decades...you will argue with it in your head while reading along amazon.co.uk/Crashed-Decade…
@DalrympleWill @TimothyDSnyder @simonmontefiore @adam_tooze [Meanwhile, @aksikorski says he really enjoyed reading David McCullough's Truman biography this year, which reminded me that it's another good source on the creation of the postwar international institutions that are now under attack}

@DalrympleWill @TimothyDSnyder @simonmontefiore @adam_tooze @AKSikorski The creation of the post-Cold War world was no small feat either! Phillip Zelikow and Condoleeza Rice explained how it was done in To Build a Better World

@DalrympleWill @TimothyDSnyder @simonmontefiore @adam_tooze @AKSikorski Re-read Mary Sarotte's The Collapse, the true story of how the Berlin wall came down this year (hint: it was an accident...) because I was teaching it to undergraduates. Worth a look in the year of the 30th anniversary of that momentous and weird event amazon.co.uk/Collapse-Accid…
@DalrympleWill @TimothyDSnyder @simonmontefiore @adam_tooze @AKSikorski anyway, that's just a taster. There are so many more! Here are some links to my books too, they also make excellent presents. Merry Christmas to all.
