You can definitely do great work without having to sacrifice other aspects of your life -- in fact, in many cases, having a fulfilling life outside of work is a requirement in order to do great work
Greatness is much more about inspiration and quality than about quantity and intensity. Intensity is only a net positive if you already know exactly what you're supposed to be creating

When interviewing, don't test for specialized knowledge or skills that can be easily acquired. Best way to filter out good candidates.

Test for broad abilities & experience. For the faculty to understand & solve a problem. For skills & ways of thinking that take years to acquire
If the answer can be googled, or learned in one week on the job, then it's a bad interview question. You'll train your people, so hire for that which you can't train. No shibboleths.
I always ask the same questions (makes it easy to compare candidates), and they're very straightforward. No particular knowledge needed -- just the ability to program. No tricks.

Regarding the ARC challenge feasibility. It is meant to be difficult, and I don't expect it will be fully solved in 10 years. But I know for a fact that it is partially approachable today using program synthesis. I will be very disappointed if no one scores better than 1 :)
I see lots of people asking about "generating more data". You can definitely encode some tasks in program form and use these programs to generate thousands of new input/output pairs. You can do whatever you want! However...
...don't get caught up in the mindset that more data will solve all of your problems. That's the deep learning way of thinking. More data will have limited usefulness on ARC.

If you're not sure where to start on the ARC competition, here's my advice.

It's a very difficult challenge, but I strongly believe (with some evidence) that someone smart & motivated can develop in a few weeks an approach that solves ~5-10% of the tasks in the hidden test set.
If you want to use external data, or hard-code Core Knowledge priors -- all of this is allowed. Virtually anything is allowed. Just get those leaderboard scores to go down :)

The interaction between Toobin and Dershowitz on @CNNSotu today was very interesting. Toobin took great pains to point out that Dershowitz was making his constitutional argument about what the Constitution requires as an advocate for Trump, not as an expert.
Dershowitz seemed surprised and annoyed that Toobin made such a big deal about the issue. Dershowitz readily conceded that of course he was acting as an advocate.
But we shouldn’t overlook why Toobin thought it was important to emphasize this point on national TV.
Dersh is identified as a constitutional scholar & Harvard law professor. Those titles allow him to claim expertise. It gives him an air of neutrality that he wouldn’t have if he were appearing only as a lawyer.

As Toobin implied, people might mistake Dersh as a neutral expert

Every ARM SoC is proprietary, closed hardware. Same applies to most other hardware components like Wi-Fi / NFC / cellular radios, touchscreens, cameras and even batteries. There is nothing open about it, and not shipping the firmware updates just exposes users to vulnerabilities.
Try not to get duped by projects pushing an ARM SoC and other proprietary hardware components as open hardware without proprietary firmware. There are several projects very deliberately misrepresenting this, misleading users and putting them at risk by not providing the updates.
Full security updates covering all components are incredibly important. Being able to update firmware/microcode rather than replacing hardware over and over again is not a negative. Verified boot, keystore HSMs and other hardware-based security features are also important things.

Okay, here’s another thread of things I think should exist in as many Nigerian languages as possible (many of them online, but some not). Please add yours.
Multimedia online dictionaries. Something like YorubaName.com but for words. Full lexical dictionaries. That have sound, are exhaustive, and can be added to. We’re working on one at YorubaWord.com. Imagine ALL Nigerian languages visible online in this way.
More name dictionaries. YorubaName.com, IgboName.com, EdoNames.com, etc. Eventually, it will become prudent to have them all under one umbrella (NigerianNames.com?). How many times have you had to ask people what their names mean?

1/ It’s simple to note: One has to subtract before adding. Give up what’s bad, before thinking about adding what’s good. True for habits, food, news and everything else.
#life 2/ We live in a world with many apparent "signals”.

We’re consuming:
- More info/news/entertainment
- More food
- More social networking
- More things to-do/work...

…than prior generations. It’s making us lazy and critically, disengaged.
#life 3/ It’s unclear what the signal to noise ratio is - it’s a function of one’s own consumption habits.

And separately, we’re prone to setting additional goals too:
- Read good books
- Eat a healthy diet
- Have fewer but better friends
- Work smart

etc.
