I try really hard to avoid reading the "competitive landscape", because it inevitably infuriates me. Either they did a pointless s/monitoring/observability or they twist up in knots to avoid mentioning honeycomb while singing all of our songs.

I like the gentle bridge between "the three pillars" and "...are actually bullshit", but how you manage to get there without citing @el_bhs or me is a feat. (I've never heard a peep about it from the people they did cite ¯\_(ツ)_/¯)

Then we tiptoe around the part where metrics are shit salad, and people have been paying to store their data in 3+ tools pointlessly for years, which is both spendy as fuck and makes it impossible to correlate between any two questions without copy pasting ids all over...

There is surely a point where open source clubbiness and ordinary vendor myopia tips over into outright disinformation and colluding to keep your own users in the dark until you can catch up.

It's especially frustrating when we have been transparent with our solutions to the point of foolishness, even open sourcing a third of our code.

We want to survive as a business, sure, but what we want even more is to solve this problem for the industry, to ease people's pain.

If we were after a quick buck, we have had plenty of opportunities for that -- four years of users requesting better regexps and statsds, and is patiently saying "no, I know you think you want that, but in fact you want this other thing"

Never really expected to see that other thing turn up in a grafana presentation on "the future of observability, which definitely doesn't exist yet" and fails to cite us, but hey. Life is funny like that.
