Spotted Elk's band of Miniconjou and Hunkpapa, whom were Ghost Dancers, had left Thatanka Iyotake Sitting Bull's camp after he was assassinated on Dec 15 to seek refuge at the Pine Ridge rez (prisoner of war camp #334)

They were intercepted by the 7th cavalry. On the morning of Dec 29, the 7th opened fire. 20 soldiers were awarded Medals of Honor for "extraordinary heroism on 29 December 1890, while serving with 7th U.S. Cavalry, in action at Wounded Knee Creek" #RescindtheMedals
Hehaka Sapa, Black Elk, recalls hearing the gunfire from Pine Ridge and charging into Wounded Knee with other warriors where they drove off the 7th cavalry out of Cankpe Opi. They 7th dug themselves in a ridge where they remained for the night #WoundedKneeMassacre
Black Elk shares in his book Black Elk Speaks, that the Lakota warriors nearly routed the 7th cavalry a second time (after Little Big Horn) before they dug into the ridges and hid. Later, Buffalo soldiers would help the remaining 7th escape #WoundedKnee
Pictured are the annual memorial riders who retrace the route taken by Spotted Elk from Sitting Bulls camp to Cankpe Opi. Also the Medal of Honor given to soldiers. Rep Haaland has intro legislation to rescind the medals as Lakota have demanded for years.
