#2019 is being hailed as the year of the street protester. From Baghdad to Hong Kong, here are eight protest songs that rocked the resistance: (1/9)
In Iraq, @Hussamofficial’s viral anthem “Abu al-Tuktuk” pays homage to tuk-tuk drivers, who’ve transported scores of injured and dying protesters to hospitals & clinics. It includes the lyrics: “We are the heroes of the nation & we don’t fear death” (2/9)
@Residente, @ilevitable & @sanbenito dragged Puerto Rico’s governor amid mass protests over long-simmering grievances on the island two years after Hurricane Maria: “Your apologies are drowned in the rainwater/ In houses that still have no roof” (3/9)
Chilean feminist theater group @lastesisoficial’s “Un Violador en Tu Camino” (“A Rapist in Your Path”) called out rape culture and victim shaming: “It’s not my fault / Not where I was/ Not what I wore/ The rapist is you!” (4/9)
Canadian rocker @ASutherland9 released “Politician Man” after his First Nations community declared an emergency over contaminated drinking water. He says to PM Trudeau: “Lyin' to my face/Lyin' to yourself/Lyin' to the people you said you would help” (5/9)
“Glory to Hong Kong” is a Cantonese song that’s become an anthem of the pro-democracy protests, now in their 7th month. It includes lines like: “Do you feel the rage in our cries?/Rise up and speak up, our voice echoes/Freedom shall shine upon us” (6/9)
In Chile, demonstrators denounced income inequality by banging pots & pans, a type of protest called #cacerolazo – & the title of @anatijoux’s song: “With our fists and spoons we are bashing the establishment/and the state, cacerolazo!” (7/9)
Alaa Salah became an icon of Sudan’s protests after a photo of her wearing a long white dress and gold earrings while standing atop a car and leading a sea of protesters in chants went viral: “In the name of religion, they burnt us! Revolution!” (8/9)
And finally, “Baby Shark” – the popular children’s earworm – became a protest anthem in Lebanon after a crowd of demonstrators launched into the song/dance to calm a frightened toddler. (9/9)
