Today I attempt to visit the California DMV without an appointment. A live tweet thread.

I lost my wallet on a trip a few months ago. That’s never happened to me in my entire adult life. Talk about feeling like a dumbass.

I don’t drive much these days, so I’ve been limping along with my Global Entry photo ID since then.

We shut the Duckbill Group down for two weeks, so it seemed an opportune time. The DMV is at capacity inside so we’re waiting to wait in line to wait in line.

I blocked out the rest of this week so we’ll see how far I get. I’ve brought along my passport, social security card, car insurance card, cellular phone bill, marriage certificate, and iPad. It’s the identity theft starter pack.

“You really should have filled out the application online” clucks the DMV employee to folks in line, making wild assumptions about folks’ level of access to technology.

Beteeen my battery pack, iPad, and iPhone I’ll need a recharge roughly by the end of Trump’s second term / start of his third.

Oh, that’s why it’s important to register to vote while you’re thinking about that.

It’s been ten years as of 2020 since I legally changed my name—and thus my passport expires in Q4. I don’t have immediate international travel plans, so how’s a good time to renew that—once I use it to get the new license. It’s a dependency chain.

Line hasn’t moved in a good twenty minutes. The interior is at capacity.

For all of the "Get an appointment!" folks: right now it'd save all of 30-45 minutes and has a three month waiting period.

Fortunately there's a bathroom easily available, so it's better than a #reinvent keynote. Now up to 230. We're closer than ever!
